Just watched King Arthur. What a bum! I completely agree with Hemel. It could've been much better in the hands of a good producer (and director!).

Yeah, but were you really surprised by that? *BoP has seen the trailers, is plans on avoiding it like the plague*;)
Chronicles of Riddick.:D Bad script and acting aside, I liked it. 'Specially Riddick. And some of those set designs and costumes were really kewl. :D Definitely a departure from Pitch Black though (where Riddick was less superman, and more evil sinister killer dude).

I watched a movie called Boys on HBO. I didn't really like it but Lukas Haas was in it so I stayed interested. He's such a great actor, I'm suprised he's not more famous...

I just watched:
Mystic River: Amazing movie. The actors in it were incredible
Cold Mountain: A little slow, but still a good movie.
Repo Man: Already seen it many times...still a great movie. It's so funny.
U-Turn: Very odd movie, pretty good. Sean Penn was great, same with most of the cast, except for Jennifer Lopez (why would they cast her in this movie? She's a horrible actress)
Pirate
08-13-2004, 09:20 PM
I loved Mystic River. I went to see it in the theater and I had never seen a preview or even heard of it.
I wathed Lost Boys today. I thought it was pretty funny even though it was supposed to be horror. It's hard for me to believe that that kind of clothing was so cool 20 years ago. It's probably what Queen of the Damned will be like in about 20 years :p .
I also saw Solaris. A lot of people have said that the movie was increadably boring but I thought it was the most artful and beautiful movie I had ever seen. Every frame of the movie was beautiful. I recomend it to anyone whose not looking for an action packed Vin Diseal or Jackie Chan movie but prefers something more artful and beautiful and deep.

Watched 13 going on 30 yesterday. To be honest, I expected it to be much better than that. There just wasn't as much comedy as you'd expect from the trailers. :(

Watch that recently too. Another sad case of not squeezing the lemon enough. It was better than Welcome to Mooseport, though, as comedy goes.

Well I seen Kill Bill 2 and it sucked so bad, i wish it had all the 'exitement' of the first one, the ending was so lame! I also watched a bunch of movies on cable. Anyone seen levity? It was very strange.....but entertaining and a little emotional.
I liked the Natalie Portman bits :P

Saw Something gotta give this Friday.
Diane Keaton was too floozy. (had expected more character from her)
Jack Nichelson was too pushy. (ditto)
Amanda Peet (too intense)
So what could have been a fairly good movie was downed by the actors and incessant music.

Yeah, read the book, definately! By the way, there are some variations on the book- some have the last chapter, some don't. The publishers didn't want it in there. Also, some versions have a glossary, some don't. I believe that Burgess did not want there to be one, but it might come in handy anyway. Have fun.^^

The Prince & Me (or Prinsen & Jag as they say in Sweden ;) )
It was entertaining, fairly predictable, light-hearted and pretty good (if you want a light-hearted movie). Julia Styles was quite good as the beautiful love interest. There was only one dumb scene that I can recall, where Julia's character, who works at a pub, it pointlessly dancing around with her shoes off when she was supposed to be working. It was out of character. The romance was also a bit rushed at the beginning, but whatev. But I won't spoil the rest for you, go watch if you like light, romantic movies.

I'm just going to post this here (since this is about movies):
What movie would you suggest that is:
1. Liked by girls & guys alike (this is teenagers I'm talking about)

Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow - not great, but certainly good. It was different.
Shaun of The Dead - Again, different. Funny. I liked it very much.
and I rented and watched Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi Special Edition 2004 - very good, didn't like a bunch of changes, others i liked - changes only account for what, like 2 minutes of this film? Not that big a deal and still a great film. :)

As Good as it Gets - oh, that's one of those movies that I've seen parts of at one time and parts at another - I really need to rent it and watch it through. I enjoyed the parts I saw!
I heard Sky Captain was fun, but not great, and Hobbit seems to agree. I think I'll pass on that one.
My husband and oldest son saw I, Robot and enjoyed it - another fun but not great movie.
And speaking of Will Smith, a friend saw that new animated fish movie - fun but not as original as Nemo.
I was going to see the Vanity Fair adaptation, but it's already out of the theaters! I'll keep an eye on the local cheepie theater and see if it pops up there. Anyone seen it? I love the book!

It was a good movie, it's not the greatest movie but its a classic Tarantino film. It's his style. You have to be into low budget, independant style films. Personaly I lke these types better to the huge hollywood blockbusters because they tend to be more personal and more in depth. Thats just MHO though. I liked the first one and if you like sword fighting or independent style filming check it out Rosie.

I must say that I've heard it has some good martial arts fighting, including good sword work. Short of the "flying stuff" the rest has been given a thumbs up in the martial arts community. After all , it's a piece of fluff, not a docudrama.
have you seen it?
No, I've been waiting for it to come out on video. It looks like is is now, so I'll probably get it.
Hobbit and Starr - as for me, I didn't claim it was ALL lies, and my sources were other that the Internet, except for Beor's opinions (our formerly-resident Army-guy-in-Iraq that saw it and commented on it). And I think someone can make a valid comment on a film if they haven't seen it, based on other people's research and comments.

Saw "Taxi" in theatres two days ago. The new one just out with Jimmy Fallon, Queen Latifah and the sexy female bank robbers.
I went in with only mediocre expectations and came out in hysterics...much funnier than I expected...and the villains were EXTREMELY hot!
And Rian, in relation to the "new fish movie"...it is called "Shark's Tale" and stars Will Smith, Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Renee Zelwegger, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Ziggy Marley and Peter Falk. (Impressive cast to say the least...)
I didn't see it, but am told by kids and adults alike that it was great. However Nemo was still aknowleged by both parties as a better film.
And I saw Shrek 2...hilarious! (another impresive cast: Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas, Julie Andrews, John Cleese, Rupert Everett, Jennifer Saunders, Larry King, and Joan Rivers)
The LotR reference was unexpected and pretty funny. My personal favourite was the mermaid and the sharks, and the Pinnochio mission impossibe and Michael Jackson dance moves. And of course any cat owners would agree that Puss made that film.

I don't know why film-makers think stuff only happens in Britain during the wars - this was relocated to WW1 which it considerably pre-dates. I don't mind though - gave me a chance to see Alex Jennings as the soldier father *melts* :D

I was disappointed in "The Day After Tomorrow". It had so much potential, but it was bogged down with stupid scenes like the wolves on the boat, and the fact that they were outside when the eye of the storm hit but magically lived etc.
There were some cool scenes, like when people are crossing the Rio Grande, when the Mexican government allows sanctuary to the Americans if all third world debt is forgiven, and the survivors in New York (it's always New York  ) coming out onto the rooves. All the scenes with Sir Ian Holm were really cool.
I just saw the Mask of Zorro! This is set at the same time and place as "Two Years Before the Mast" by Richard Henry Dana, Jr. Cool eh?

I watched 'The Day After Tomorrow', or rather, about 15 minutes of it. It looked kind of stupid and unrealistic to me, but that could just be me.

Yes, it was quite bombastic, but the effects was pretty neat (that was what I really was referring to).

The Mask of Zorro is a very neat movie. I love movies with a lot of swordplay in them.

And thanks.
The acting in TDAT wasn't particularly good, though.

Yeah, the acting wasn't the best, but it didn't detract from the movie. I thought Anthony Hopkins was quite brilliant (as usual), and Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones were hot (as usual). :D
I love a lot of sword play in movies too! It was very cool to watch in Zorro. I get annoyed when someone blows an obvious opening to kill their opponent though. It makes them look incompetent or stupid, which I know isn't the effect they're trying to get accross.
With this movie, I also wish the bad guys were a tad more complex. Captain Love was sick, and insane, but he was totally one-sided and boring. There could have been a lot more done with his character. Same with Raphael, though he wasn't sick like Love, and he was a smidgen more complex.

The acting in The Mark of Zorro was medium, but as you say Anthony H never did a bad movie. Banderas does a good impression of Zorro and ZJ is hot as you stated.

Perhaps they wanted to get across that Love was so full of it that he couldn't kill his opponent at the first meeting.

Katt, how do you think it would be for kids? I'm thinking of taking my two older boys, 6 and 4. They like superheroes... would they miss the satire and take it as a 'serious' superhero movie? (heck... I might! :p ) Is there anything inappropriate... which wouldn't completely go over their heads??
Val, we saw it with the kiddos last night - they loved it! (mine are 14, 9, and 8). As long as your boys don't have trouble with violence - the bad guys are trying to kill the superhero kids at one point in the movie for quite a long scene. The boy runs super fast and the girl can turn invisible, and they are avoiding bad guys shooting at them with machine guns and trying to run them down with flying saucer things. Also, the killer robot machine (looks like a spider-type thing) is pretty relentlessly chasing good guys and throwing them around. There's really only one death I can remember - one of the saucers flies into a cliff and explodes. Another time when the dad superhero throws soemthing heavy on a bad guy, it shows him later on just stunned, not dead. Nothing else objectionable.

Ah yes. Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. That reminds me of The Importance of Being Earnest. Hmm. Rupert Everett was really hot in that movie, but alas he is gay (to my girly dismay!, wow, is that considered poetry?). There were no cucumbers in the market! Oh no! The end of the world!

If it's the one I saw, I was really disappointed. Henry Tilney's my favourite Austen hero and as you said - shudder... All the dream sequences were a bit weird too. They should definitely remake Northanger Abbey as a decent film - it's such a great book.

I expected Thorpe to be...at least somewhat convincing. It seemed like in the book he actually had Catherine caught for a bit. No one could fall for the *cough ugly cough* actor who played him in NA. Simply detestable.
I kind of felt sorry for Catherine. Mr. Movie-Tilney didn't look like the best catch. In the book he was described as handsome, I believe (?).

Donnie Darko actually makes no sense if you think about it hard enough, which I did. It is entertaining, makes interesting points, but on a whole makes zero sense. None of the movie would have happened if "frank" hadn't saved donnie in the first place, and thus he would not have had to sacrifice himself later - but then of course we wouldn't have a movie. Other than that, other parts of it didn't make much sense as well.
Scarlet Letter? Not a very fun book, I had to read that last year. We also saw most of the movie, or parts of it.

Excuse Moi? No sense? It makes perfect sense in a philisophical way. Thinking about how every action has consequences, the consequence of Donny not dying causes many other people to suffer. "Frank" is merly a spirit guide to the temperal world that Donny is remembering from his future.

The problem with the matrix storyline, IMO, is that it started out with such a grandiose vision, which, if it had managed to pull it off, would have made it a freakin' awesome story. We went in expecting these big answers, and big twists, and all we got was a freakin' jesus story. The simplicity of the ending is what made it confusing. I was like, "huh?", is that it??

I'm really getting into the Scarlet Letter movie. I tried reading the book once and didn't finish it, but I like the movie. That's odd for me, because usually the book is better. But this particular movie follows the book almost exactly, word for word. I'm disappointed that I'll miss the end today, since I have to take some kids to the dentist, so I think I'll borrow it from my teacher. Some parts I don't understand though. No character development, or else very little, which made the movie a little confusing. But, it did have some stirring speeches and some great camera-shots. Anyway, I agree. The butterfly effect is silly - the changes are seemingly polar opposite extremes (varsity to prostitute?!), and only really effect HIS universe. And that whole killing himself as a foetus was pretty silly... Much preferred the theatre ending where he just walks away.
