View Full Version : What makes you laugh?

Without intending to create another hate-PJ thread, I wondered:
Who else out there laughs at parts of the movies that are supposed to be serious (the parts obviously intended to be funny do not count)?
Mine:
Any of Legolas's Captain Obvious moments- "A diversion." ~ "The trees are speaking to each other!" ~ "They're taking the hobbits to Isengard!" ~ "Something draws near. I can feel it." ~ etc.
Whenever Aragorn cries.
Whenever Aragorn stares evil in the face and makes that "EEEEeewwww! there's a bug on the wall!!!" look.
Gandalf 'exorcising' Saruman from Theoden.
When the kid falls from the horse outside Edoras. (TTT)
When that lady- I think she's 'Eothain's mom- 'screams' (?) on Eowyn's shoulder during the battle of Helm's Deep.
"My lady, we must make haste.... My LADY!"
When Gandy (EE RotK) falls from his horse and is staring at the Witch King in horror.
Gandy begging the hobbits to be silent when the Mouth of Sauron holds up the mithril shirt.
I have more, but I'll not put all of them down just now.

I agree Legolas' obvious lines. Like when the orcs are creaming around them in Moria and it svery clear they are about to attack. "Orcs" I wanted Aragorn to whack him upside the ehad then. Also the avalanche of skulls is just ridiculous. I kept thinking. OMG that is a lot of skulls. I mean thats like 2 million people falling and theyre just calmly walking through. also at the end when the entire fellowship save Boromir of course walks into Frodos room and they all just start laughing and then Frodo and Sam stare at each other for five minutes. Now Ive always defended them as being straight but couldn't PJ have made it a little easier. I mean come on.

alright i'll try again ...
nah it just won't be as good *sighs fatalistically*
ok leave all that bit ...
on the Moot, things that had made me laugh:
Gorbi's description of the balrog being hit on the head by Pippin's stone down the Well (and Sauron having a Bath whilst Sam galavant's round Mordor wearing the one ring) :)
also some of telcontar dunedain's postings in the 'Lyrd of the Ring's' esp old tom bombadil's song, and the bit were aragorn at the council of elrond reveals the (something like) "here! are the pants that were ripped! etc (that last bit hilarious may have been another author?? - this from memory so apols if wrong
agree ref: Legless tell it like it is 'the shrewd' greenleaf : "they're TAKING THEM TO ISENGARD!", (pauses looking meaningfully into the distance)
where the beep did he think they've been galloping off to all along? Did not the white hands on the shields not give a clue?
also what is this "red sky int' t'mornin'? Blood been spilt this night"???? MUMBO JUMBO?
ANYWAY HOPEFULLY THIS ONE WILL SEND! :)

Wasn't that mine? :D :p Oh, I don't know.
Yes, Celeborn is unabashedly stupid. Oh, the other one like that: Haldir. He was passable in FotR, but in TTT it's past swallowing. The whole slow-mo death thing is so embarassing to watch. Makes you want to laugh and that makes you feel lousy because it's OH!-so sad.
Anyone for Treebeard? "*weird chokey gasp* I knew these trees from nut and acorn..." Oh, boy!
Or Saruman? Almost anything in TTT or RotK with him in it makes me crack up, with the possible exception of the "Gibbets and Crows" line. He's just so.... pious and.. great and WONDERFUL. The BEST thing that ever happened to the movie. It's like with every line he's saying "I could carry this WHOLE movie myself!!!" :D
Brego. Can I say more? What's with the kiss by the river, carrying the wounded Aragorn back to safety in a pseudo-Lassie fashion? ROTFL.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who reacted to Haldir's death that way. There wasn't the least bit of realism, IMO. It was so rediculous that I couldn't help sniggering.

Ma! Aragorn's fallen down the well!
:D
Yes, that whole scene was laugh out loud funny.
Once I recovered from shock, I found Denethor's death completely hilarious. It was just so spastic and funny. :D Too bad it was never a plot point that Denethor's palintir only showed a pair of withered hands no matter how strong your will was. Oh well, this scene did spawn a lot of funny "stop drop and roll quotes". :D
Ironically one of the few scenes actually intended to be funny only drew eye-rolling from me. Drawf women are nearly indistinguishable from Dwarf men to outsiders.

Haldir's death is very very funny. Especially when Aragorn screams, "HAAAAAAAAAAAAAALDIIIIIIIIIIIR!"
When Boromir's dying, and Merry and Pippin are just looking at him with the "What do we do next?" look.
When Denethor dies.
Man, it's funny when people die in those movies. :D Except for Theoden. If only it was Merry talking to him, and not Eowyn.
Rosie Gamgee
04-06-2005, 09:27 AM
Agreed!!! I mean, he looks at her with that WTH? look on his face... If Theoden had really thought that his niece was there on the battlefield he'd have died of shock, shame and sorrow.
I rather like Boromir's death- for Sean Bean's part of it. Merry and Pip.... Oh, well, I think they could have done a better job. I think the most realistic reaction to somebody's 'death' was Eomer in the EERotK finding Eowyn... but now I'm off-topic.
I snigger everytime I hear Aragorn snivel out, "You cannot weild it! Nhone of us cahn. The One Ring ahnswers to Sauron alhone; it haas no ohther mahster!"
If you've listened to the cast commentary on the RotK DVD, Denethor's death becomes even funnier! Bernard Hill starts spouting in this scene about how it would have been hilarious if Denethor, halfway down, remembers "Oh, my parachute!" and pulls the cord and then the parachute catches on fire... It's a really funny picture, and even more enjoyable to know that even Bernard realizes it's an idiotic moment.
Frodo stumbling so pathetically toward Minas Morgul make me laugh. What an idiot. And later in Shelob's spongy habitat: "Smeeeegol! Smeeeegol!... Oh, Sam..." Serves you right you little creep!

I think he's pretty cheesy sometimes, probably having to do with the fact that he's stage-trained.
Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli riding down the Dimholt road. I mean, like, Orli with his "They were cursed" always makes me tag on "and the only way to end their curse is to put all the gold pieces back into the stone chest..."
Faramir. Need I say more?

Yes, I agree the spotlight atop Barad Dur was very funny. But I also laughed at the PJ's new scene of Frodo waving to a nazgul at Osgiliath. What was that supposed to mean? I can recommend a little story I found on fanfiction.net exploring the outcome.

Mine are a lot like everyone else's: Captain Obvious... every line in the trilogy is so melodramatic, it makes me want to cry.
Pippen rolling around with the Palantir just makes me grin, and I think it's really terrible when Treebeard says, very calmly and satisfied, "The filth of Saruman is washing away," as Saruman is being lowered head first into the water. That's just wrong.
And, of course, Sauron at the fall of Barad Dur. He just looks like he's so shocked, with the spotlight and everything. It's so expressive; I can just hear his last, plaintive words:
"Wait... w-what? What? What's happening? I can't see! ... ... guys? What's going on?!?"
...I didn't think many of the funny parts were funny, actually.
Oh, yeah, as a side note; Bernard Hill was in, among other things, a truly terrible rendition of A Midsummer Night's Dream that I rented and watched for an English class because I had to watch it again, and couldn't find any other version. Lots of random nakedness. *shudder*
But it was worth it; Mr. Hill was playing Hermia's father. He wore a green three piece suit and a bowler hat, with much the same beard as Theoden had, but trimmed a little. He even had a horse! It was so funny, he looked exactly like Theoden! :D

I agree, especially that frantic looking around when the Black Tower comes crashing down. Sauron's 'expression' was priceless. :D

The bit where Smeagol freaks out at Faramir when Faramir's asking him what he's talking to himself about--"myyyy PRECIOUS!!!! AAAARRRGG!!!" That cracked me up the first time I watched the movie, and still does every time I see it. In fact, Smeagol is pretty funny--what about the time after he first started leading the hobbits out of emyn muir and when sam walks by smeagol kinda flinch/cowers back and says, "nice hobbit"?

I love that part, but I think it was supposed to be funny.
Almost any shot of Faramir in TTT makes my mouth quirk. He's just so.... dorky! "If you aa not spies, then who aa you?" lol!
Frodo, yelling to dear little Smeagol as Faramir's guys haul him away: "Smeagol- listen to master! Smeagol, don't struggle! SMM-EEEEE-GOL!" :p

And--one of my favorites--Eomer, as he's saddling his horse and he's talking about why the horses are getting crazy, "they grow nervous in the shadow of the mountain" or whatever, and then he does this CLASSIC thing with his face, and says "That mountain is evil" oh, that look is priceless! Eomer, however, is absolutely one of my favorite characters-primarily in the book, but also on screen he came across well, I think. It's not fair what PJ did to Eomer and Faramir, tho, I think he detracted so much from their true characters. Both men had so much more strength and valour than they were allowed to portray onscreen.

When Sam & Shelob are going at it, after he stabs her and she's backing herself up into her hole, she's doing those "wounded spider" cries, and the funny thing is, the last thing shelob "says" is "Nooooooo!" right before she finally squeezes herself out of the picture. Hilarious! Does anyone else notice this? Spiders don't say "no", period.
