Actually very, very little of it has ANYTHING to do with talent. A lot of times they'll take a terrible singer and train them up.
A lot of it has to do with who you know.
Another part of it is personality. If you have a motivating, pulling persona, then they might take you even if you sound like a dying duck.
Do you take Voice Lessons? If you do you might try asking your teacher if they know anyone who would be willing to help you out. If you don't take Voice Lessons, I would suggest you start ;).

I agree with Tessar. Unless you're looking to audition for something like a "classical" (think Charlotte Church) or maybe jazz album, it's not so much about your talent as it is about your image and your connections.

I'm assuming that you're trying for a pop style? (just based on the artists you seem to enjoy :)).
Most ESPECIALLY when it comes to pop it is NEVER about how well you sing. It's who you know, and if your personality can light up a stage.
In fact, in some things like Broadway shows, it's only partially how well you can sing even though singing is a very important part of the show. It's more about the acting and (once again) ability to really connect with the crowd.

You could always go indie.
What I mean, is, if it's more important to you to sing and have people hear it, then record a demo, find some friends to help you out with the music, and send your demos to radio stations and record lables.
Don't do it indiscrimnately, listen to the artists that the labels publish. If you like the music, and it bears a little resemblence to what you want to do, you have a better chance of getting an offer.
But, as has been said previously, connections really are your best bet. And personality. You don't have to be fake, just be distinctive.
And good luck. :)

Yeah, good luck Eowyn! I say, go for it. My brother recorded an oboe CD for an audition. It was a demo CD for university Music faculty auditions. Maybe inquire at your local music store if they have a recording studio. Then you could rent, say, an hour (and maybe someone to work the soundboards).
I'm not sure how to promote a CD. My brother didn't have to promote his as it was for an audition. *ponders*

Well, if you record for an audition you don't need to promote the CD so much, since it's not a marketing device. If you audition (most likely live or with a tape of your own) with hopes of getting a record deal, it's a completely different ball game.
I would love to record a jazz album...

Not to say singing well is bad by any means...Mr. Kalan Porter (the most recent Canadia Idol) won the competition on Voice and looks alone, he has no stage presence whatsoever. I'm sure he's a nice guy and all but...yeesh...

just hanging around colleges works in england, if you are going for a genre of rock or indie, that is, or if you are going for pop music get yourself on popstars/pop idol/the x factor, and have simon cowell tell you you're rubbish :p

I'm reading this in the hope that someone who said 'it's all about who you know', would then say 'and here's my card'. Oh well. :(
Nurv - no-one idea how one should go about promoting a CD. I have two, neither of which I have successfully done anything with. :o
Eowyn, you could always sing thrash metal. :p And good luck! :)
