I really hope Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Garden State get some nods...most likely both for Best Original Screenplay, though.

I predicted quite closely (it was pretty easy actually), the only one I didnt predict was Sideways. I figured Kinsey would be nommed instead.

Added: oops...and Closer was also a wrong prediction when I made this thread, but I later revised. :D

I'm a bit disappointed that 'De Zaak Alzheimer' didn't make the nomination for Best Foreign Movie. :(

SHREK! Shrek is the ultimate animated ever. Disney got beaten big there. The Incredibles isn't that bad. good enough to lick Shrek's shoes anyway.

Thats pretty mean :p ...you have to admit, Monster's Inc was the best by pixar . Shrek wasnt bad, but not too great. But Shrek 2 is the best! Of course because of Harold and P. Charming;)

shrek 2... the catnip scene was classic :p
I know! :p ...it was awesome! But you have to admit, the best part is when Harold and the F. Godmother stop at the fast food place. And when Prince Charming puts on the paper crown! :p :D

Anyways, more about oscars. I understand why John Williams, John Denby, and so on got nommed for best scores. But Thomas Newman's score for the L. Snicket film? I liked that movie, but the music to me seemed mediocre, and I wasnt impressed.

Don't get me wrong on this, I adore the Shrek movies inside and out. Especially the line when Antonio-Banderas-in-Boots says "Already our minds are becoming one!"

yep, puss definitely steals the show... and the fast food scene is great too

actually, i haven't seen the incredibles or shark tale yet... so my opinion might be a tad biased :p

I'm rooting for The Incredibles because even though I liked Shrek....it was more of same. There was nothing really unique about it...Sequals generally don't do well anyway.

The reason sequels don't do well is because they're usually so far off from the first movie it's insane. I think Shrek 2 is the best sequel since Toy Story 2 (and I am most certainly including The Two Towers in that statement). It's updated computer graphics should at least recieve a nod, I think. I thought the story was a lot better fleshed out and complete than the first movie, as well.
Did anyone catch the spoof on Legolas's cheesy mount on the white horse?
It was great!

I think Finding Neverland's score nomination was deserved. The music in that movie is very beautiful. Very period, but at the same time not stale. I also liked the fact that it caught the ear without being intrusive to the dialogue, contributing to the emotion without over-powering. I liked it, and hope it wins.

What about Love Actually? I thought that movie was completely brilliant.

I love Shrek and Shrek 2 equally, they are brilliance. I haven't seen The Incredibles or Shark Tale, but Shrek rocks!

What did get a nomination for foreign film EƤrniel?

Monsters Inc is good. Yes. Disney have some good stuff. But Shrek, and even more Shrek2 beats them.
I haven't seen Shark tale, which looks like sort of rip off from Nemo. only sort of. I don't really think it is. I think the movie is great, not as good as Nemo, maybe.

Remind me about I need to see Shrek 2 soon again- Long time, no see.

And instead we discuss Shrek vs. every other ani movie.
Well, I think maybe that movie about those vinedrinking guys, don't remember what it's called or the director. But I think it is a good movie, thoug I haven't seen it.

And maybe Million Dollar Baby. I don't know really.

I've seen Finding Neverland, and Ray.

Ray was very good from an acting standpoint, and a very good story- and of course because Ray Charles just died it is a lot more touching.

But I think the Neverland is a much more original movie, and therefore it gets my vote out of the two. Neverland does not follow the true story of J.M. Barrie and the Llewellyn-Davies boys closely at all. What struck me about it is its adherence to the theme of Peter Pan. This movie successfully conveys the emotions of Peter Pan better than any dramatised version of Barrie's play, I think. It celebrates childhood while embracing growing up; it's a bittersweet tale of the loss of the innocence and heartlessness of children as they grow up, accepting the wisdom and responsibility that comes with adulthood. There's a million different movies out there about over-coming adversity in its many forms, a million love-stories told a million different ways. But there are not too many stories so beautiful as this one and, despite the changes to the facts, the truth of the story remains. I hope it wins, really.

The Aviator will probably win best picture. Not because I Scorcese deserves it (I don't know, I haven't seen the movie), but because he's been "gipped" four times before.

Oscars playing catch-up.

And the big winner was Million Dollar Baby, by Clint Eastwood. Anybody seen it?
And Jamie Foxx got for Ray, not very surprising.

Hey! that wasnt really fair to M. Scorsese you know...Clint Eastwood won best director for Unforgiven in '92 (it also won best pic), and here he wins agai? They could have at least let Scorsese have the best dir win...

Thank you GOD The Aviator didn't win Best Picture. I haven't even seen the movie and I hate it. Why does it seem to me that DiCaprio can only play variations of Jack Dawson?

Go Hillarry Swank, and CATE- I am so glad she won! Morgan Freeman FINALLY got one; yay!

Now I must go out and see Million Dollar Baby. Looks good from the clips.

Well, I have to say that the show was good. Chris Rock was hilarious. I didn't like Bionce (spl?) singing every song (well, she didn't sing the really lame version of 'Accidentally in Love', at least)- ugh!

DID ANYONE ELSE SEE THAT WILDLY HILARIOUS SPARTACUS PEPSI COMMERCIAL???!!!!

I cant stand Chris Rock! Ach!

Well, I can't say Leo si one of my favs, but I think he's quite a good actor (even though he can only play var. of Jack Dawson-which, I always thought, was a very lame name.) And I wouldnt have been surprised if he had won.

Cate Blanchett really deserved her Oscar. She was awesome in The Aviator. I was surprised the movie didn't win Best Picture because even if the movie wasn't that great, the sceneries were.

Really? How come? I'm not normally for comedians like him, either, but his Oscar show was extremely funny. Even when he was picking on the President: "Imagine you work at The Gap..." Hilarious!

I will admit that he did a good job acting the part of the retarded younger brother in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. The only other movie I can think of that he plays somebody different from the Dawson guy (btw, a name's a name- although I must admit that Hollywood's preoccupation with the name 'Jack' is getting annoying) was in Man in the Iron Mask, which is entertaining mostly because of the other stars, not Leo.

Where have you been? Return of the King, anyone?

And as for the Disney-Pixar deal...I'd say that both Toy Story and Finding Nemo were both better than Monsters Inc., as good as it was. But I haven't seen the Incredibles yet...

Well, most of the films I enjoyed most in 2004 were utterly neglected at the Oscars. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the biggest example of this, but there's also A Very Long Engagement and The Phantom of the Opera - not to mention films that just don't win awards, like the Spider-Man and Harry Potter sequels (which, in both cases, were the best of their respective franchises).

For my part, I really enjoyed both The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby, but in retrospect, I would have preferred it if the former won. With Catch Me If You Can and The Aviator, Leonardo DiCaprio has really earned my respect, and I think he's a fine actor indeed. As easy as it would have been for him to coast on looks and fame alone, he's chosen to do challenging projects with directors who are willing to push him (even if Gangs of New York sucked), and I think that's great.

And Scorsese got screwed.

For what reason I do not know.... Maybe the other supporting actors were REALLY bad.

WHOA!!!! I must put my foot down and say for the record that Monsters Inc. is probably the best of all the computer-animated movies out there (even RotK)- or at least level with the Toy Stories. If for no other reason because it's so original. I mean, who comes up with the idea that closet doors are used by actual monsters to enter children's bedrooms at night to scare them in order to make power?? Anyway, even if you don't agree, it's a million times better than Finding Nemo.
