Would you all agree with me that the hobbit is the least talked about book of middle earth. I think it could be my 2nd fave and after all it was what bought me into the world of tolkien

i think that the least talked about book about middle-earth would prolly be one of the HoMe's or something like 'The Tolkien Miscellany' which is a book i have that has alot of his writings like Smith of Wootton Major, Farmer Giles of Ham, Tree and Leaf, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and a few more. One of those or a book by some random tolkien scholar.

i'm assuming that you're speaking to me, since i'm the only one that i am aware of that has a Cloud avatar, and it is pretty cool, but anyway, back on topic... I wouldn't say that the Hobbit is the least liked of the books, maybe most under-appreciated, or least talked about

oh yeah, my friend had to do a book study on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, he said that he didn't like it as much as LoTR, but really, who would expect him to?

I thought this thread was about the our least-favorite hobbit. Duh! :p
BTW for me that would be Ted Sandyman. He's always trying to puff himself up at the expense of others. Sheesh.

That's what I thought too, I'll have to agree with you on Ted.
But, in my opinion, I don't believe that the hobbit is the least liked, it's just not as epic as LOTR, and is often relegated to "kid's story" status, so sometimes overlooked. However, it's an awesome story worthy of a better visual interpretation than the Hobbit movies I've seen. Unless, of course, you count my friend's high-school, low-budget, shot-in-the-park film. That was awesome. :D

I agree with Embladyne, due to the fact that it is not as grand a work as LoTR, some people might write it off as not as good as LoTR, I happen to like them both, a lot

If I talk about LotR, someone always says, "And what about the Hobbit?" I guess there aren't many poeple who talk of the Hobbit, but there are some, even if they're not obsessive fans like some of us.... I personally love the Hobbit. I don't know where it places on my favorites list, but it's up there. :)

I agree. It is probably not such a hot toppic. I have to give Hobbit credit for one thing: it also brought me into the wonderful world of Tolkien :) But IMO the Hobbit isn't nearly as good as LotR or Silm.

Hobbit is awsome at introducing a new reader to Tolkien. Especially for kids. You can read a little bit to them each night before they go to bed, they'll look forward to it and be eager to read the LOTR.

Hm... I was kind of hoping it was a hobbit bashing thread in general... :p
I don't like the Hobbit. I prefer the gore, the misery, and the angst of the Silmarillion.
*ahem* And the characters. Can't forget that... ;)

That's exactly what my dad did to me :D
So I love the Hobbit. And most of my friends do too, from when they were younger. I'm not sure it's the least liked. I just think it's the least respected as a work of epic fiction (mostly because it's a children's tale at heart)

The thread is actually about whther the Hobbit is the least liked out of all the Tolkien Books. :)

Oh. Oops :o Guess I should have read the first post.
Well, for me it is. It simply doesn't match up to the rest I've read. But keeping in mind that it is more children story than the rest, I can give it credit for being a good book.

Maybe only in comparison to LOTR & the Silm but I'd argue that The Hobbit is almost always someone's introduction to JRRT's works, so even if it gets left behind in depth and prose it still is as majestic . . . for never a better looking front door has been written...

i agree.. the hobbit isn't given the coverage it deserves even though it is a major piece of the puzzle that makes up the third age.. the most obvious reason could be the fact that it was introduced as a children's book originally and therefore people find it hard to fully associate the text with the lord of the rings..... what do YOU think?

Yeh, I think that's the problem really. While LOTR is regarded as an adult book that's also suitable for younger readers, The Hobbit is still thought of as a children's book. The writing style is ceratinly less adult although the magic the book weaves is just as wonderful and it ceratinly forms a crucial part of the Ring story.
As to it being the least loved of Tolkien's works, I wouldn't agree. I think it's a brilliant book. Something like Farmer Giles of Ham or Smith of Wooton Major are probably more deserving of the title.

Mine too. And in many ways, closer to my heart. My dad used to read to us, we used to listen to tapes of it, and the cartoon I saw before the Bakshi film.
