Okay. This is no joke. My post count is about 300 higher than it's supposed to be.
There are more... Pytt, TD, JD, Valandil, Mercutio, the list is endless... Nurvs is up by about 2000!
What is going on!
Does anyone know?
Does anyone else have a problem?

Funny. I checked people's post count this morning and found they had been altered. Now that I checked them again, it seems like they've been altered even more. My count for instance had risen to 2200+ this morning and now it's risen a bit more.

Is it affecting anyone who doesn't frequent the Cafe?Yes, I did some research earlier (anything to avoid studying).
Baby-K had less than 2000 posts before (1992 iirc). Now she has 2146 posts and she has never posted in the Teacup café.
#1Aragornlover (first person in the members list) had 24 posts earlier and has 44 now. She hasn't posted for a year and never in the Teacup café.
I think I've seen a few others too who have never posted in that thread but still have gotten a higher post count.

Ok mooters, listen to what I've found out by comparing people's post counts!
Right now the admins have disabled the Welcome thread or something, so every post posted in that thread don't count toward your post count. If you want to know your real post count, simply look at your current count and add the number of posts you've posted in the Welcome thread.
Anyway, the admins are playing around with the threads. They 'disable' the posts in the welcome thread (and probably other threads as well) or they make the posts worth twice as much.
Now admins, let me hear you say "bugger, he caught us" :D
If you're interested, this is how I figured it out: I chose a few number of mooters who I knew weren't posting during this post count crisis - #1AragornLover, Aden, Baby-K and Linaewen. I knew exactly how many posts they had originally.
#1Aragornlover had 24 posts. Now she has 14. She has posted 10 times in the Welcome thread. 14 + 10 = 24, which is what she had from the beginning.
Aden had 129 posts and has 126 now. 3 posts in the Welcome thread.
Baby-K had 1992 posts, 13 of which where in the Welcome thread. She has 1979 now.
Linaewen had 2579 posts. Now she has 2511 because she has 68 posts in the Welcome thread.
[edit]Oh, thanks to #1AragornLover for having so many of her (few) posts in the Welcome thread. Without her, I never would have figured this out :)

Ok mooters, listen to what I've found out by comparing people's post counts!
Right now the admins have disabled the Welcome thread...
Once again, you may believe me or not, but we're not disabling anything. In fact, I do not think it is possible to disable post-count in a single thread. You can disable a whole forum, but not a single thread, AFAIK by all the investigations that I've done since the beggining of this bug.
So,
Now admins, let me hear you say "bugger, he caught us" :D
cannot say it because there's nothing to be caught from us. This is all an odd bug.
I've made some restorations of postcounts (it's a feature of the control panel), but though it has solved some peoples counts, it doesn't seem to have solved completely all problems. I'm more and more convinced that there's something buggy with those large threads (mostly with Teacup, it seems, but as you say, with the welcome too and probably others). I have to keep looking at it and have to speak about solutions with the staff. Haven't seen them around much during weekend...

HOBBIT
12-14-2004, 08:11 PM
More likely than not, your post count displayed is accurate, or very close to being "accuarate"
Yes, the search posts by user feature was never perfect and often displayed fewer or more posts - and of course if you were from the ezboard, posts were added to your total and your "find all posts by user" would be significantly lower than your post count.
You shouldn't use that as an accurate tool. I mean other than the "search for posts by user" all the post counts are 100% accurate for all we know.
I don't know if an Valandil fessed up - it was a "joke"
Topics like the "Teacup Cafe" and "Welcome Thread" and "venting thread" were copied a bunch of times and put in mod forum (where you guys wouldnt be able to see em). Posts in the mod forum still count towards your post total.
It took a while copying them and and equally, if not longer time deleting them. All we did was gradually delete all the temporary copies.
That may have screwed up the post count, or not.
In any event, this was an excercize in "post counts dont matter"

*squirms & looks embarrassed* :o
sorry... :p
Just wanted to 'kick up the dust' a little. What I ACTUALLY wanted to do was figure out a way to make everyone's post counts DROP... but I couldn't think how to do it without actually deleting threads. So I came up with the alternate scheme of making post counts soar.
Then... a botched experiment, an explosion in the lab... and it all went wrong! I first copied 'Teacup Cafe' into the mod forum. A day or so later, I did 'The Welcome Thread'... only when it finally finished, I noticed I had TWO copies on my hands in there! So - I deleted one. Later... I noticed that some people's counts didn't even show the add from the ONE Welcome Thread, so I copied it another time. Anyway - a few others got copied and later someone cleared them all out. I thought for SURE the post counts should then all be back to normal... but since they're not (and mine is off an odd amount... it's about 10-12 off what the Welcome Thread shows), I wonder if it was some 'bug' from the time I got my 'double-copy'.
So... as a mod, I can't directly mess with your post counts... but I COULD indirectly affect them by working with the threads!!
OK, OK... I feel all ashamed of myself. :o ;) :D

Probably not.
No original posts were deleted. Only copies of posts and threads made , and then deleted.
Chances are your post count is correct - don't worry about the discrepancy between the total displayed on "find all posts by user" and your post count. As said, before that was never all that accurate anyway.
Probably the find all posts by user thinks that you have more posts on entmoot than you actually do and your post count is actually correct.

Given the outpouring of heartfelt emotion over the post count, and that I have achieved the exalted status of Elf Lord, by actual postings or intelligent design or not-so-intelligent design, and the exaltation of BoP to "old", perhaps there is a history of the Entmoot thread or forum lying about in a unknown place that would inform us "NEWBIES" of the prior events of the "Moot? This time I think it's because "The Anything Post" and "The Previous Poster" were deleted.

hmm that would account for some of the difference. do those ones still come up in the searchfor all posts then? but befoe eveything went tits up im sure i was in the 900's. but that still doesnt explain why mine went down by about 50 again.

Posts from deleted threads are gone from everywhere. Not a trace to be found AFAIK. Closed ones come up in the 'all posts' list though.
Maybe they deleted another old thread?

Have I ever posted in those threads?
My post count is down by about forty now... :( And I'm not even here enough anymore to fix it the old fashion way! ;)
I am so not used to waiting for a vacation to end... :o Why oh why can my mom not get the Internet at home! :p

They must've. I lost about 20 posts again, well, a few days ago. (maybe the "^confused about posting" thread was deleted). So I passed 1000. again!!!!!!
woo hoo that should count as passing 2000.

Sorry, I'm new to this thread, but you say there's a way of FIXING that? What is it?
Posts from deleted threads are gone from everywhere.
Then it can't be because of deleted posts because when I do a search for all posts, I get the actual number of my posts not the screwed-up one!

Mine seems fine. I'm not going to read all of this. What did I do now?
I already deleted one of my websites without going on it.
You want me to tell you about a nice Twilight Zone scenario this would make? :D

Sorry. My way of fixing it would be obsessive posting. It keeps my post count somewhere near what it should be. And it works well enough for me... ;)
It won't give me back those 40 posts that are still missing, though. :(

You and your posting.... :D :p
I've missed your obsessiveness over this break...
Yeah, I'm not really worrying about my post count anymore, 'cause it's a lot closer to the truth, just four or five under...

Admins, has anything been done about this glitch yet? (Sorry if you've already answered such a question, I can't read the whole thread).

Yep. We've studied it carefully, and I think there's not major problem with it. The search engine has never been 100% accurate, and besides there are duplicates of lot of posts in the Mod's forum: we sometimes copy threads before we edit or delete something in order to keep registry of all...
Anyway, Hanza's problem seems to be different. Perhaps someone accidentally altered her postcount, but none of us can recall doing it
So, the only solution I can find is to fiddle with it again to restore it to what her search engine says.

What has happened to the 'what are you reading right now' thread? If I click on the 'last post' button I'm put on page 11 which seems to contain the last post, but the page says there are lots of more pages in the thread. If I click on the 'last page' button I'm taken to page 92, but there are obviously no posts there.

First of all let me clarify that although I'm responding in this thread it is only because Arty has asked, but I'm not admitting explicit nor implicitly any relation (at least known to me) between the original topic of this thread and the (supposed) bug reported by the aforementioned Arty. ;)
And now... are you sure you're not mixing the two existing threads? In Ben's boardwide annoucement says that long threads are going to be split in two: one closed with the old ones and one opened with the last ones. Are you sure you've hit the "last post" and the "last page" buttons of the same thread?
I'm not experiencing any problem with them...
Artanis

Ooops - was this a wrong thread to ask in ? :p
No, I have not mixed the two threads. I have the same experience with both threads actually, they appear exactly similar to me, the only difference is that one thread is closed and the other is open.
Has someone put a code somewhere "if Artanis then BUG" ....
:D :p
If I'm the only one experiencing lots of empty pages in that thread, then it's OK. I guess I can live with it. :)

Okay. This is no joke. My post count is about 300 higher than it's supposed to be.
There are more... Pytt, TD, JD, Valandil, Mercutio, the list is endless... Nurvs is up by about 2000!
What is going on!
Does anyone know?
Does anyone else have a problem?
I don't, but I'd like to have one!
