If you've been following the "Men of the Silmarillion" thread (if you haven't, you had better go do that. It's really amusing :p ), you'll have seen that Valandil decided that the topic was exhausted, and as a result, we should go on to the Men of Appendix A.
So... with no further ado, here it is. :p :D
My favourite has got to be Glorfindel.
I mean... he just rides up on his horse, and the Witch-King turns and flees from battle! How much better can you get (without looking at the 1st Age :p )

wasnt glorfindel an elf? oh wait, by men you mean male...
Elemmírë

Yes. I MEAN MALE. I forgot we had some problems about that in the other thread too... ;)

Wow... in MY honour!!!??? :o And even honour WITH the 'u'!!! :D
Uh... don't make it sound like you're settling for second best here though! :p
Not sure if this belongs here in the LOTR book thread, or the ME thread... we'll see how it goes. :) ;)

Better? :p
I didn't know where to put it, but since the Appendices are in Lord of the Rings... :D

Oh wait... I don't know anything about the original Valandil... um... care to enlighten us Val? ;)

Best you find out yourself, or from the others here... I don't wish to go on and on about myself. ;)

Sure you don't, Val. :p
You're Isildur's youngest son, right?

The youngest which is the fourth. ;)
For some reason Elendur sounds quite cool.
Have I got the name right/ he was Isildur's eldest son wasn't he?
who can that be? *ponders*
Valandil was son of Isildur it stands in the appendix.
Elendur is not mentioned until after Valandur, which is pretty late :p
Arvedui is not that bad..

Elves are Men.... (just as hobbits are).
Now as for Men of Appendix A.... Oh... who to chose...?

... What I want to know is why the guys are posting in about their favourite men in the fan-girl thread. I had no idea the gay community was so rampant here on entmoot.

I wasn't going to comment on that, BoP... :D
The MotS thread seemed to be strictly female (almost, at least), and TD even said that he was never going to post there.
So he comes and posts here instead.
I don't get it... ;)

I am totally straight and intend to post in this thread solely to make fun. My heart belongs to Galadriel, so there isn't any point in arguing about it. :p

I am a woman and have every right to post in here, I suppose, and I'll say that my favourite of the men in Appendix A is Faramir, son of Denethor II. Of course, if you're asking about guys mentioned only or more extensively in the appendix, I'll admit that Vorondil the Hunter caught my eye once or twice. Kind of reminded me of Nimrod. Also, Boromir, son of Denethor I. Got to love those Numenorian-decended hunks.

Nimrod? *snigger* Bet he got teased in school. ;)
Oh yeah, even I knew Valandil was Isildur's youngest son. Something unfortunate happens to him right? :( I mean besides his dad getting killed and the kingdom failing...

Well I can't I start the 'What's sadder, 'The Men of the Silmarillion' thread or 'Men of Appendix A' with out posting in at least one of them! ;)

As one of the 'entrants' in the range this thread covers, I thought I should deign to make a cameo. :p
For those who were wondering about "Elendur"... yes, that name was used for a later king of Arnor (six after Valandil), however - that WAS also the name of Isildur's eldest son, but we only know that from 'Unfinished Tales' - not from Appendix A. :)

Look who graced this thread with his presence! :D
Is this a thread where we fight over guys... like the Men of the Sil thread?
What do you think these Appendix A guys would think of legions of fangirls? Probably form the Last Alliance of Elves and Men to Fight Teenaged Hormones...

OR... maybe say;
"Whew... toppling Sauron's forces has been HARD WORK! I can't wait until I get home to see if there's a legion of fangirls awaiting me on my doorstep!" ;) :p

my favourite appendical male has to be
the witch King of angmar, or perhaps aragorn

Valandil!
You think so eh? ... ;) So you like fangirls? I don't think there's a lot of Valandil fangirls though... high kings from the appendicies aren't as accessible as Leggsie. ;)

Neither are Silmarillion men... though that didn't stop us...
Speaking of which... I just got a copy of HoME 11 and was looking at the Grey Annals (yet another way to avoid doing work  ) and guess what was the first connotation that came to mind at this quote:
"Strong and fair were they yet, for the light of Aman was not yet dimmed in their eyes; swift they were, and deadly in wrath, and long and terrible were their swords."
The bold is all mine... and I think we all know why... ;) :D

OK - let's get this one going again...
Ladies: two contemporary Kings of the Dunedain... which do you prefer?
Araphor - in Arthedain of the North. He came to the throne at a young age - in 1409, his grandfather (Argeleb I) and father (Arveleg I) having both lost their lives in battle with Angmar. It says of him:
Araphor son of Arveleg was not yet full-grown, but he was valiant, and with aid from Cirdan he repelled the enemy from Fornost and the North Downs...
He went on to reign for 180 years (until 1589!), second only to Valandil in the North, and longest of all those who reigned ar Fornost.
Eldacar - in Gondor of the South. He came to the throne in 1432, after the death of his father Valacar. Eldacar's main problem was... he was a 'half-breed' - and his coming to the throne triggered the Kin-strife. From 1437 to 1447, his throne was usurped by his second cousin Castamir - who slew Eldacar's eldest son Ornendil. :( But later, Eldacar returned to power and defeated his foes, driving them first to Pelargir and then on to Umbar, slaying Castamir himself. He lived out the rest of his natural life and died in peace in 1490. It says of him:
To the lineage of Gondor he added the fearless spirit of the Northmen. He was handsome and valiant, and showed no signs of ageing more swiftly than his father...
So ladies... who will it be? Which one is 'hotter'?? :p

They call Eldacar "handsome" too, so I guess I'd have to put my vote on him.
Anyway, I like the part of his name that says "Elda..." ;)
Val, would you change the title of this to "Men of the Appendices"? :)
Valandil

Done.
OK - which King Eldacar do you like better... the King Eldacar of Gondor (son of Valacar), or the King Eldacar of Arnor (son of Valandil)?? ;)

How come you ladies are always picking the SOUTHERN guys?

Tolkien only mentions this because it's the EXCEPTION in the south... while it's the RULE in the North! :p

Think about it:
Would you rather have the exceptionally hansome guy, or the kind of handsome guy that anyone can get? It's called supply and demand. :D No matter where they're from, if they are more handsome than the average guy around, then they're more desireable. :p
