I was wondering what people thought would be the best order to read the books about ME in. I thought a good order would be Hobbit, LOTR, Silmarillion, UT, Lost Tales, and HoME. It just seems like it reveals thing in a very natural order and it goes from Basic ME stuff to complex idepth stuff about LOTR.

That could work the most easily, but if you want to do it historicaly, it would probably go better Silmarillion->Unfinished Tales->The Hobbit->Lord of the Rings->Histories of ME. I think that would be best to have an almost usless history backround for LotR and Hobbit.

I agree with Haradrim, actually. If someone starts to read the Sil, he'd just give up nad not understand anything. When you start to read the Hobbit and LotR... you already know Middle Earth. It's easier way to know Tolkien.

Most have found that reading the books in the order of publication works well.

That would be:

The Hobbit
Lord of the Rings
Silmarillion
Unfinished Tales
HoMe series

It seems also to be a much more rewarding read if you re-read the LotRs again after the Silmarillion. Also, I don't think there is any particular order that the HoMe series has to be read in, but some like to do them in order, but it isn't really necessary.

This thread has been done many many times. You can find other threads on this topic through a search. This is also in the wrong forum. Moving to the Middle-earth forum and closing. :)
