And so the red blood flushing in their faces and their eyes shining with wonder, Frodo and Sam went forward and saw that amidst the clamorous host were set three high seats built of green turves. This is duplicate copy of a thread I posted over at SF-Fandom. This passage has seemed strange to me from the first time I set eyes on it thirty years ago. Are these turves like those I sod my yard with? Why make thrones out of them? Is this some ancient practice of which I have never heard? What do you think?

I cant remember what they are but I have read about this happening somewhere. Cant remember where but I do remember it.

IIRC, it's in ROTK, on the Field of Cormallen. Presumably the 3 thrones would be for Rohan, Gondor and er somebody else.
My mate built one in his garden, but the turf wouldn't take. I think you'd have to water it almost continuously.

The other throne would have either have been for Dol Amroth, Gandalf or Frodo I'm guessing.

Dunno. That his master was getting so much attention from someone else.

That seems a little wierd. THat he would blsh at hsi own masters attention. Maybe he would patr him on th eeback and say congrats but blush. I dont know. :)

Well this is Sam we are alking about though so I reckon that he could blush at his own masters attention. Oh by the way what page is it on because I want to read the whole passage to see if gives anything away.

Because Sam was truly humble, he didn't like the limelight.

I'd say he was. At Cormallen, Sam had an equal part in he honour, IIRC. They praised him too. He may have borne the ring but for a while but he had been a steadfast companion to Frodo right to the end, and that deserves praise too.

Yeah because the song was praise them with great praise not praise him with great praise.

It is on pages 248-249 of the paperback version, in "The Field of Cormallen." And, yes, the three seats were for Gondor, Rohan, and Dol Amroth, because their banners were displayed.
