(Sorry SGH, didn't know whether this should go here or in Hobbit forum :o ) No problem and this is the forum. There is information strewn throughout Tolkien's works, and other reference sources. Try the Peoples of Middle-earth, volume 12, The Histories of Middle-earth series.

Hobbit information can be found in:
The Hobbit
The Lord of the Rings
Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-earth
The Adventures of Tom Bomabdil
The Peoples of Middle-earth
If you want to be confused, then read The Return of the Shadow, The Treason of Isengard, The War of the Ring, and Sauron Defeated for early versions of The Lord of the Rings. However, the Epilogue to The Lord of the Rings is well worth reading. It was published in Sauron Defeated.

For what it's worth, the essay "Of Dwarves and Men" provides information about the most ancient Hobbits Tolkien wrote of (living in the Vales of Anduin early in the Third Age).
