Since we've had movies and TV show, lets move on to favorite music and bands and stuff like that. By far, my favorite band is koRn. Their new album, "Issues", is awsome. Falling Away From Me, Trash, and Wake Up are the best songs. These bands also kick @$$, adn they're in no particular order: Blink182 Limp Bizkit Rage Against the Machines Kid Rock Sugar Ray is also pretty cool.

Well, I think that while today's "music" is, uh, interesting, most of that garbage does not deserve to be called music. I just listen to miscellaneous stuff, like movie music and game music.

gdl96
12-02-1999, 01:31 AM
Oh yeah, I also forgot that 'Wake Up' by koRn is also the best alarm clock song. For about the first minute and a half, the lyrics are: Wake the F*** up!!! about 2 dozen times to a hard rock backround. Just imagine waking up to that.

bmilder
12-02-1999, 01:40 AM
You're entitled to your own opinion, but that stuff is garbage. Profanity does not belong in music. Other than drums and stuff, it's just shouting. Rap is even worse...

gdl96
12-02-1999, 01:46 AM
Yes, rap is pretty bad, but rap-rock (a hybryd of rap and rock) such as Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, and Rage against the Machines is pretty cool. Some people consider koRn rap-rock, but I don't. Their new album is definitely not rap-rock.

Ya, I kinda agree with ya, Ben.

The One Ring
12-02-1999, 02:34 AM
So do I. Question: What makes extremely loud drums, profanity, and knowledge of approximately three chords music? If you want real music these days, go listen to something by John Williams, in my opinion the best composer today.

anduin
12-02-1999, 02:35 AM
I like most types of music, especially Jazz, Bluegrass, R&R, Zydeco, and Swing/Big Band. My favorite performers are The Beatles, Beck, Simon and Garfunkel, Louis Armstrong, Glen Miller, Adrian Belew, Led Zepplin, Peter Gabriel, Matthew Sweet, Ella Fitzgerald, Cat Stevens, Branford Marsalis, Paul Simon, and Gene Krupa.

gdl96

I never said I didn't like John Williams. He is the best composer, he composed Star Wars music. I just don't listen to him on a daily basis. I like listening to rock.

bmilder
12-02-1999, 03:05 AM
You can listen to that... stuff... but it's not really rock and it's certainly not music.

Darth Tater

Favorite band: Beatles!!! Favorite composer: John Williams!!! What I hate: Korn and all the junk like it!!!

anduin
12-02-1999, 03:53 AM
Tater, I didn't know you liked the Beatles!!! That is so cool. :D They are my favorite band of all time. I was totally obsessed with them when I was a teenager. What is your favorite album? Favorite song? Want to swap trivia? I use to drive people batty, always saying to them, "Ask me anything about the Beatles." What can I say....I know it all :P

koRn rules and this is the 1000 post in general messages!!!!

bmilder

I love many bands and many kinds of music. My favorite band is Depeche Mode. I enjoy music with melodies and good lyrics. I also listen to classical music and movie soundtracks. On Beatles, I can´t say I´m a big fan but "Yesterday" is such a lovely song, very sad and beautiful.

The One Ring

bmilder
12-03-1999, 03:14 AM
Even if he did like your noise, it still wouldn't be music. :) To be music, it has to have a melody. In most of those "songs," there are lyrics but they are just shouted. I suppose maybe it is technically music because of the percussion, but only music in its most primitive form. Music had advanced so much, and then rap came along and corrupted everything...

gdl96
12-03-1999, 03:50 AM
Hehe. The rap part is so true.

Well, I don't listen to the radio. Sorry if that makes anybody sad. I listen to classical music--Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Chopin, Faure, Saint-Saens, and all their friends. But not all the time. In fact, I have this weird defect: when I listen to music, I have to pay attention to it 100%. My roommate was playing the radio today and I couldn't concentrate on anything else. So of course when I do have time to just sit and listen, I want to listen to something complex, moving, and meaningful. Words get in the way, unless I'm doing the singing. I just like pure music too much. So most of the time I listen to sweet silence. :)

I listen to my MIDIs so often that I can't concentrate on the Internet unless something's playing! :)

Ok i got around to reading this and....while the beatles still rule (and so does The Who :) ), i have to say, ben, you have the nerdiest taste in music *gasp* (your EXACTLY like my brother, who spends 24/7 on the computer and gets in trouble with school becaues of it :\).     Second off, KoRn isn't trash, nor is rap, or the rap/rock hybrid....but i guess you all wouldn't know since your taste in music sucks...and i doubt half of you people saying its trash haven't even HEARD their music in the first place....     Listen to the new song from Dr. Dre...then listen to the end of days soundtrack (some awsome songs there) and your opinion will *hopefully* change unless your hopeless like ben.

He can still edit your posts... but do try to show at least a little respect for everyone... And as to the whole rap thing, or raprock or whatever... there seems little point to it. Pop music probably peaked in the 60s or 70s, then went downhill... I guess it is music, maybe, since it has the drums... but what's next? Just shouting and profanity without drums and some guitars? ;)

My favorite genre is classical/instrumental music. I mostly listen to that lately, especially to the movie scores of John Williams. I also like 60's-80's pop/rock and certain pop/rock music from the 90's. I absolutely despise rap, except for a select few songs from a select few artists.

My favourite bands are The Pixies and The Jesus and Mary Chain. I am also partial punk, especially The Buzz@#%$s. Apart from that I listen to mainly classical music, especially JS Bach and Mozart. IMO, rap is not music, and I guess the `c` is silent.

I just read the entire Thread, and I must say that it was not greg who was lacking some respect but you Ben... You can't just say something is junk 'cause you don't like it! You have the right to age but hey, youth will always be youth and still KoRn is music....

Taimar
08-18-2000, 12:01 PM
Nice to come a fellow J&MC enthusiast, emilsson. We are a dying breed these days. BTW, I also like Depeche Mode. The live album "Depeche Mode 101" is outstanding.

anduin
08-18-2000, 12:49 PM
Um.... Shan, Ben and Greg are the same age (one of them has to be older, and I am sure someone will set the record straight). ;) Everyone has the right to his or her opinion, and if Ben thinks that koRn is "junk", that is his opinion. It would only be disrespectful if he said Greg was an idiot for liking koRn. See the difference? :p

emilsson
08-18-2000, 06:43 PM
Taimar, "101" is my favorite album with Depeche Mode. Their songs get so much better when you hear a crowd singing along.

In Sweden there was a music magazine called POP and they had an interesting interview with Jimmy Reid. It was that article that got me into Jesus and The Mary Chain. That´s the way to discover really good music in Sweden, you got to go through magazines :) .

Taimar

I grew up only a few miles from the Reid brothers, emilsson. I first saw The Jesus and Mary Chain at one of their first gigs in Glasgow about 15 years ago. `Psychocandy` is, in my opinion, the greatest album of all time.

arynetrek

i have to agree with Ben & others that bands like Korn & Limb Bizkit are nothing more than shouting over drums & guitar.

it seems like all the best music & best eras for music are all over & done with. i'm a big fan of classic rock, & that pretty much ended by the late-70s, & then electro-pop or whatever its real name is came along (depeche mode, erasure, early Cure, some Styx) & while the style didn't die out, it did get hidden. then finally, bands like Smashing Pumpkins & RHCP showed up, did some great innovative things, but are being driven away by the sugar-pop & the screamers (rap & rap-rock).

music can't be music unless it does something to the listener - and seemingly-mindless screaming doesn't incite emotion or passion or anything - it's just there to be loud &, to me, annoying.

feel free to criticize my music, here's my list -
Led Zeppelin
Smashing Pumpkins
The Who (the surviving 3 are coming to dallas & I CAN'T AFFORD TO GO!)
Metallica
Depeche Mode (haven't heard them in forever & a century)
some Styx
some Aerosmith
Beatles, esp. Anthology II
Pantera
some REM
various Russian classical
the Escaflowne soundtrack
i know i've forgotten someone, but this is already too long.

Taimar, for some reason I like Darklands more than Psychocandy. "Happy when it rains" is such a good popsong, I get happy everytime I hear it.

arynetrek, I agree with you on what good music should do. But I also think different music appeals to different people. I can't wait for next year because Depeche Mode is releasing a new album with a tour following it. :)

The main type of music I listen to is oldies/soda pop bar. I listen to other things though

Archies
Young Rascals
Weird Al
Elton John
Billy Joel
Styx
Beach Boys
Paul Simon
Grateful Dead
GFR
etc.

Shanamir Duntak
08-20-2000, 03:18 PM
Aryne First, you can't say screaming and shouting as you call it it mindless. But as you used seemingly, so I understand you can think it's mindless, it's your opinion. But then what you can't say is that it doesn't incite emotion! Arrr.. these songs are often more emotionnally charged than any other! Just because it carries a different set a emotions than what you're used to doesn't mean it don't incite some emotions.

Yes, mostly this style carries anger, rage, etc. But sometimes, one want to feel those to relieve of his own problems. Right now, I'm listening to Limp Bizkit - Break stuff And I can hear myself shouting "Break your F...... face tonight!" And I DO feel a lot with that. (By the way I'm not referring to YOUR face :p )

My list:

Nightwish - A metal band mixing normal heavy metal with operah. Their songs are about fantasy, Tolkien and such. Very beautiful but also quite dramatic.

HIM - A metal mix of glam-rock, 80's rock and pop; Billy Idol- and Kiss-like. They sing on things like difficulties of love. They've for instance made a very good remake of Chris Isaak's Wicked Game.

I also like bands like Kula Shaker, The Doors... Björk has some good songs... Richard Ashcroft's "Song for the Lovers" is absolutely beautiful. :)

Gilthalion
08-20-2000, 07:12 PM
(The little Hobbit stares at the curved ceiling of his comfortable hole and thinks for a moment...)

My personal favorite type of music is the singing of Elves, but nobody listens to that much any more. (Gilthalion heaves a deep sigh.)

Instead, I see an incredible range of musical tastes in people who ALL seem to like the works of Professor Tolkien.

I wonder if there is any MUSIC that we all like as well.

It seems that most everyone appreciates modern composers like John Williams. I would presume that the best works (#1 with a bullet!) of the greatest composers through history would be appreciated as well.

I have found that the finest examples of a genre of music can be appreciated for what they are, even if you do not care for the chaff that the Industry incessantly throws in your face.

I haven't had a chance to really listen or collect, but I like the new Celtic Music, especially the more ethereal kind. I also like the new Alternative music that reminds me strangely of the old Folk Music of the Sixties.

I like good old Classic Rock from the 70's and 80's.
(The little hobbit reflects that it is bittersweet to find one's favorite music is now referred to as "Classic.")

Do NOT speak to me of Disco!

The Beatles were magnificent. I'm glad they quit and I'm glad they never got back together. We were spared the possibility of bad Beatles music (as influenced by Yoko Ono). As it is, there is none and that is a Good Thing!

I appreciate Elvis. He actually did a good job of acting in KING CREOLE, a movie made before the Industry took over. And his voice was truly matchless. Too bad he couldn't handle being The King of Rock & Roll.

I can appreciate Glenn Miller for creating Swing, a music that preceded Rock & Roll and helped my grandfather's generation dance away the blues of World War II.

And the Blues! Listen to the old Billie Holliday recordings!

Listen to Mahalia Jackson's early work, loud and strong, unpolished and raw emotion from her soul as she sang for her God.

Listen to the literally deafening discord and to the profane obscenity that together somehow manage to convey messages and feelings of hatred, vengeance, lust, rape, murder, and death to this generation of youth and you can surely appreciate the Evil that inspires it.

Fill your mind with this, and you will twist your spirit and those around you, maiming yourself and others. The spell of nihilistic despair will rob your life of love and beauty and peace that you might otherwise have known.

This doesn't mean you have to listen to SMURF MUSIC either!

(And with that, the little hobbit crinkled his nose as if he smelled something foul. Gil was NOT known for his fondness of Smurfs!)

My music is the Rock/Metal of the style of the 60's/70's.
Like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, OLD Genesis, but also some Flower Power and Blues stuff.

I hate Techno, Rap and derivatives.

But I've only got one left after heading to Calgary to celebrate IronParrot's b-day... could I substitute an almond (very heavily-veiled and harmless reference to the Napster thread) instead?

Limp Bizkit:

I have mixed feelings about them.

Pros:

Endorsement of Napster, free concerts to boot (none in Regina, and even if there were, I don't know if I would go)
Wes Borland (sp?) is a fairly good guitarist
The second-best cover of the Mission: Impossible theme... first would be the Dream Theatre (NOT Theater) job. Durst drones on, but they sampled it perfectly for M:I-2... all the good stuff, no lyrics included.

Cons:

Fred Durst. Details?

He dissed Scott Stapp (who I'd be heavily betting on to win that hypothetical boxing match).
He hung out at the Playboy mansion (You decide whether I'm questioning his moral fiber or am simply jealous).
He allowed and contributed to one track on Significant Other which, aside from having l33t sp33k in it, is eerily reminiscent of poor hip-hop, and sticks out from the rest of the album like a sore thumb. (Try to guess which it is)

KoRn:

I haven't heard a lot on these guys.

Pros:

Perhaps some of the most... attention-grabbing cover art I've seen in a while (not artistically excellent like P86's DBL, but...). Of course, I'm referring to Follow The Leader.
Very interesting work on that seven-string Ibanez.

Cons:

None that I can think of... well, there is one that I just thought of, so scratch that.
The first time I heard "Justin", I came away with a good impression of it, but I couldn't make it all the way through on the second listen.

That's about it.

Blink 182:

Pros:

All The Small Things. I love that song.
The drum tab for their first big single (I forget the name) is both remarkably elegant and simple.

Cons:

Male nudity really isn't my thing.
They're not quite punk.

Rage Against the Machine

Pros:

If I remember correctly, they had some utterly beautiful basework on their STA and Evil Empire.
On those same two albums, De la Rocha (sp?) also conveyed good intensity.

Cons:

The Battle of Los Angeles. This album sucked, period.
"Action". More details at www.ratm.com/new/action/main.html (http://www.ratm.com/new/action/main.html)
"Freedom", specifically "S.T.O.P.". www.ratm.com/new/freedom/0003.html (http://www.ratm.com/new/freedom/0003.html) . I'm a former Albertan.

And here's my message to the band, which I doubt they'll ever read.

Listen up.
You can have whatever political inclinations you want, and I and the millions won't care. Few will listen to you because you're far "left-wing", and few won't because you are. If you make good music, people will listen.

However...

How can you expect me to buy your CDs when I know very well that the money will not be going into your and the record company's pockets (which I have no problem with), but into the war against me?

When you endorse organizations and people that mock me, the place I live, and the things that I believe in, then how can you expect me to buy into it?

But when I stopped listening to your music altogether was when you committed the highest wrong.

When you made your twisted "message" more important than the music.

Back to business...

Kid Rock:

Pros:

He got credited in the Any Given Sunday soundtrack, and thus brought us P.O.D.'s "Whatever It Takes". My undying gratitude is his because of this.
Only God Knows Why. A very interesting and thought-provoking song... and perhaps, maybe, he isn't breaking the second Commandment...
A quote that he's rumored to have made about Napster... something to the effect of "What do I care? I'm rich."

Cons:

"Cowboy". Country.
Acoustic at the Blockbuster awards. ACOUSTIC!
"American Bad@$$" becomes the Undertaker's theme song. Shameful, really.

Sugar Ray

Pros:

Supposedly, the rest of "Blue" is heavier than the single... was it "Someday"?

Cons:

From all of his stuff that I've heard, his act is quite weak. Not boy-band weak, but...

And now, bmilder. Perhaps we might have found something we agree on at last.

"You're entitled to your own opinion"

Most definitely.

"but that stuff is garbage."

You'll have to be a bit more specific... if you're talking about the entire hardcore and rap genres, then I'll have to disagree. However, as far as the bands he listed...

"Profanity does not belong in music."

Most definitely.

"Other than drums and stuff, it's just shouting."

"drums", "stuff", and "shouting" are what hardcore's all about.

Note that I use the term "hardcore" to mean what some refer to as "rapcore" or "rap-rock".

I do not use it in the sense of "Happy 2 B Hardcore" ( www.cddb.com/xm/cd/rock/8...c6fdd.html (http://www.cddb.com/xm/cd/rock/89f549ac94d0870607270f402b5c6fdd.html) ), but more as exemplified by Project 86's "Set Me Up" and the Beastie Boys' early work, "Square Wave in Unison".

"Rap is even worse..."

I am convinced that out of any "genre" can come music which is worthwhile to listen to. I found this in the "techno/industrial" genre in some of Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers' work, in "instrumental/movie score" in... is it Hans Zimmer who did Gladiator?, in rap in some of the Beastie Boys' pre-"Ill Communication" work (I've given up looking for it in country, boy/girl bands, or dance). However, I find that the average music produced by certain genres is more tolerable than others... my favorite would most likely currently be hardcore, with hard rock, punk and grunge at a close second, third, and fourth, respectively.

Bands to check out:

(Hardcore)
Beastie Boys (early albums, and interspersed in albums up to Hello Nasty)
Papa Roach
P.O.D. (Payable On Death)
Project 86

(Hard Rock)
Creed (The only band I can think of that isn't subdivided into something more specific than hard rock)

(Punk)
Green Day
Offspring
MxPx

(Grunge)

Nirvana (Listening to a man who you know to be dead is an interesting experience to say the least)
Stone Temple Pilots (I'd advise you to go for No. 4 first)

"Yes, rap is pretty bad, but rap-rock (a hybryd of rap and rock) such as Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, and Rage against the Machines is pretty cool. Some people consider koRn rap-rock, but I don't. Their new album is definitely not rap-rock."

Hmmmm... a few observations.

"rap is pretty bad"

Covered above.

"rap-rock (a hybryd of rap and rock)"

It seems that you're more or less describing what I refer to as hardcore.

Oh, and it's hybrid.

"Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, and Rage against the Machines"

Machine is singular.

And it seems that you're more or less listing the major-label, MTV/Much-hyped, big-profile bands as examples. There's a lot better than them in the genre... you might want to check out some of the mail-order services.

"Some people consider koRn rap-rock, but I don't. Their new album is definitely not rap-rock."

It seemed to me that Jonathan Davis didn't really fit into the hardcore genre from anything I've heard of his.

DarthNut

"Anyone else like The Who?"

Not really, but I like the Guess Who. "American Woman, stay away from me."

And on the subject of Lou Bega's Mambo No. 5 (I'm assuming that was what you were referring to), it's definitely not rap.

You may call it dance, or R&B, or pop... but it doesn't meet the primary criteria of rap, namely spoken lyrics.

Anduin

"Shan, why wouldn't you want to listen to something that dilutes the rage you feel instead of inciting it?"

That's no good before a football game.

arynetrek:

"Metallica"

They sold out after Cliff died. What a way to honor his memory...

Gilthalion:

"Listen to the literally deafening discord and to the profane obscenity that together somehow manage to convey messages and feelings of hatred, vengeance, lust, rape, murder, and death to this generation of youth and you can surely appreciate the Evil that inspires it.

Fill your mind with this, and you will twist your spirit and those around you, maiming yourself and others. The spell of nihilistic despair will rob your life of love and beauty and peace that you might otherwise have known."

You've obviously made some poor choices as far as bands go.

Try listening to Twenty-Three, by Project 86, on their Drawing Black Lines CD... good luck finding it.

(Standard disclaimer goes here, this is all IMHO, don't take me seriously)

As far as the Dream Theater vs. Dream Theatre thing goes, it just occurred to me that I may have the two reversed.

I'm referring to the live version w/electric guitar as the good one.

Wow, you write alot. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, it just must take you a long time. Unless you can type somewhere around 98 words per minute.

As to music, generally I'll listen to anything. But that's a far cry from favorites. Almost all my music is Christian Alternative. Anyone from Jars of Clay, DC Talk, to Michael W Smith. Other than that I'm a country fan, Paul Brandt.

Last time I checked, I can go 120 words a minute... it just takes me a bit longer to think of what to type.

This is not the first time I've started to make a post, and then missed saying what I originally intended to say.

Jars of Clay aren't great. Some of their stuff is okay, but as far as I'm concerned, they're a lot better at writing songs than they are at performing them. A band at my church does a killer cover of Crazy Times...

Is it true that dcTalk is breaking up? I've heard some rumors, but haven't gotten any official word.

Shan -
what i meant by "mindless screaming & shouting" was that so much new rock & rap/rock is so repetitive - i mean, i can only listen to so many songs about anger/rage/contemplating suicide/etc. before it all starts to sound the same. & after a point, it just doesn't do anything emotionally.

"Just because it carries a different set a emotions than what you're used to doesn't mean it don't incite some emotions." - very good point. but for me, repetitiveness doesn't incite emotion. imagination & innovation do.

"Yes, mostly this style carries anger, rage, etc. But sometimes, one want to feel those to relieve of his own problems." - i find certain fiery classical pieces much more powerful for this sort of thing, because lyric-less music is so much more open to interpretation & works for so many moods.

Johnny Lurker -

"Metallica - they sold out after Cliff died. what a way to honor his memory..." - maybe they did. but then, for some people, putting their music on CDs & selling them to customers is selling out. and after a founding member dies, the band will inevitably change - metallica survived although they did change, other bands like Led Zeppelin ended themselves.

I feel that he was far more technically adept than Jason Newsted.

Perhaps Metallica would not be quite as mainstream as they are now had Cliff not died, but they would still have been successful... In fact, while Cliff was alive, they accumulated quite an impressive body of work.

I suppose you could say my taste in music is eclectic at best. I listen to a wide variety of music. It all depends on my mood. My music taste is also anything but static. I enjoy listening to new stuff (as in new to me not necessarily current) and I'm always willing to give something a try. Many of the groups I consider a "favorite" I actually discovered cause someone I knew listened to them. My all time fvorite band would have to be The Offspring. There's just something about the beat and the lyrics that never fails to crack a smile. I have a dry sense of humor and irony and sarcasm/parody just tickle me to no end. Guns n Roses has to be my second favorite but its a close second. As a group I have to say that GNR has a much broader range than Offspring.

I also thoroughly enjoy Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Depeche Mode, AC/DC and Third Eye Blind. I like certain songs from lots of other artists like the Beatles, Jane's Addiction and Blind Guardian. My favorite song is Stairway to Heaven. I don't know what it is about that song but I can listen to it all day and not get sick of it.

Even though there are some types of music I care for not at all, I think it's good to have such a wide range of music around. It provides a means for more comparison/contrast. After all, most music types and/or musicians are influenced by music that is already around. It really makes me angry to hear people who have no idea what they're talking about criticize music genres or a group because "the lyrics are bad" or "the video is too extreme/violent etc" as if that was the only way to judge music.

Oh yeah. HarryPotterbookfan, The Night Santa Went Crazy is great. Weird Al rocks. Do you listen to him? He's another fave of mine.

"So, if it sounds sarcastic, don't take it seriously.
If it sounds dangerous,
Do not try this at home or at all.
And if it offends you, just don't listen to it."

I have just recently started to explore Led Z's music. Stairway to Heaven is a great song, and it will always be one of my faves but it has unfortunely been played to death. :( Incidently, I could listen to Bron-Y-Aur Stomp over and over again. A friend of mine, a geneticist at St. Judes sent me this back when the Hale-Bopp comet passed by...

THIS HAS NEVER BEFORE BEEN SEEN ON THE INTERNET! :)
================================================== =========

I just thought I would send you my poem about the stupid Heaven's Gate Cultist. Make sure you read it at least once while listening to the song Stairway to Heaven, just so
you'll get the full effect.

Later......
Clif

There's a prophet whose sure
That the stars all have souls
And he's sailing a comet to heaven
When he gets there he knows
If he wears his black cloths
With a wish he can get with his brethren
And he's sailing a comet to heaven
There's a sign in the sky
And we're hitching a ride
'Cause you know in his words we're believing
Now we've all cut our hair
So we can follow him there
'Cause you know it's the earth that we're leaving
It makes me wonder
As I'm going under
There's a feeling I get
As the poision sets in
And my body is shaking and heaving
My last sight that I'll see
Is my cult around me
I hear their voices chant words that I've spoken
It makes me wonder
As I'm going under
And it's clear to me now
As I finally pass out
That the prophet will lead us to Hale-Bopp
When again I awake
A new world will wait
And the planets will come to a full stop
If there's a buzzing on your viewscreen
Don't be alarmed now
It's just our subliminal message
There's only one path you can go by
And that's suicide
There's still time to take you own life
It makes me wonder
As I'm going under
You're head is humming and it won't go
In case you don't know
A new Millinieum's approaching
Dear Brother did you see the comet?
And did you know
That heaven waits on the other end
And as we line up in a row
To give our live's to this John Doe
There walks a prophet we all know
Who tells us stars they all have souls
And they'll receive us if we go
And if we believe in every word
That we will find a ship of god
To take our spirits very far
A ship of rock and ice and snow
And he's sailing a comet to heaven...

Creed

I finally got off my butt and bought their new CD (just certified 6x platinum). It's... simply amazing. Definitely worth the money.

Next on my list is the two Project 86 CDs and Chevelle.

Limp Bizkit

It's official... The Chocolate Starfish and the Hot-Dog Flavored Water is quite pathetic. Whereas Fred Durst's prior two albums had at least some merit, thanks to Wes Borland et al, you would have to pay me to keep this one in my house.

Reasons?

He uses the F-word forty-odd times in the second track, and manages to make nine explicit references to NIN, and "My Way" and "Livin' It Up" crossed the line between rapcore (which I have recently learned to distinguish from hardcore) and rap.

Plus, the best line in the first ten tracks is "Your mouth's writing checks that your [rear end] can't cash" (from "Full Nelson"). I'm hoping the outro + hidden tracks has some good material, but... don't hold your breath.

The Offspring

Noodles and crew had their plans to prerelease their entire new CD over the Internet derailed by Sony, who promptly threatened them with a lawsuit. Rather than delay the release for a year and endanger the tour, they reached an agreement to distribute the first single ( Original Prankster) for Conspiracy of One on their website (www.offspring.com/). (http://www.offspring.com/).)

The verdict? It's certainly interesting, but not enough to convince me to buy the CD. But don't take my word for it... download it for yourself.

(And on an aside, perhaps Offspring should have reached an agreement with EGO or something...)

Johnny Lurker

Thanks to the self-deprecating humor in the outro, this album has finally gained a little bit of merit.

I don't see how you can say that, aryne. Some of the best recent (relatively--20th century) classical-style composers have been Russian, like Rimsky-Korsakov and Rachmaninoff, but there were a lot of great ones before them who were French, Italian, German, etc. Handel was one of the best Baroque composers, Mozart one of the best Classical, Dvorak one of the best Romantic, etc. I don't think that any composer has been or ever will be the very best. They're all different.

I havent listened to the new Bizkit album yet, but in my view, it looks like it'll be pretty cool. At the moment, My Generation and Rollin are two of my favorite songs. I dont know much else about the cd except for those songs and that fred does a song with koRn, which I am excited about. Theyre two of my favorite bands, and I love when they do stuff together. I like the last time they did something, All In The Family. It didnt have much point to it, but it was a pretty cool song.

I listen to most every style there is, just not every artist. The only real exception ther is that I don't listen to rap, because I haven't found an artist I like yet...and yes, I look. Or listen, rather. I like Jars of Clay in small (very small) doses, but prefer Petra, Michael Sweet and Carolyn Arends in the Christian genre. Other than that, classical, esp. Mozart,Tchaikovsky and Clarke, but broad band otherwise.Celtic and classic rock are my other big things. That's about it.

I'm just getting around to reading this thread. You all have quite a mix of musical taste. Here's what I like:

Classical:
Mozart, Bach, Glazounov, Tchaikovsky

Classic rock:
just about anything. I wouldn't have made it through high school without The Who's "Quadrophenia" album. I love them, the Beatles, Led Zep, Yes... I have a soft spot for Lynyrd Skynyrd, too.

80's alternative:
Discovered this at university when I first started going with my husband. The Cure, the Smiths, old REM, Simple Minds, Aztec Camera, the Cult for "She Sells Sanctuary". My favourite is U2 up to and including "The Joshua Tree" album, after that they lost me. Heard a recent song by them that seems to be going back to their roots, though.

Recent (relatively speaking):
I'm not so into the screaming and shouting. I liked Pearl Jam in the early 90s. Like the Smashing Pumpkins and Alanis Morrissette's first album.

Elanor
10-07-2000, 04:28 AM
yes, I do play the cello, though I've been slacking off a bit recently...I was mentioning just a few of my favorite composers. I like Haydn too, and many others.

Johnny Lurker

A few new faves...

Cult - She Sells Sanctuary, primarily for the trip factor.
[minus]/Pressure 4-5/Spiritfall/Sevendust/Finger Eleven/Whoever wrote "Idle".
Candlebox - Happy Pills... it reminds me a lot of Rush.
The Offspring - Come Out Swinging, which is currently my favorite song on their new CD. Not quite up to the caliber of Americana et al, but... still some quality plastic.
Cake - Sheep Go To Heaven, almost ska but so much groovier.

And, to top it all off...

War - Lowrider. The car song to end all car songs. Yes, over Rollin' (Airraid mix) by Limp Bizkit, over Radar Love by Golden Earring, over No Brakes or Bad Habit by The Offspring, or Open Hand by Project 86. It's got 'em all beat. Period.

I think this song will eternally hold that title.

gdl96
01-23-2001, 02:39 AM

Johnny Lurker
01-23-2001, 04:03 AM
ZAO - The End Of His World, taking the prize for the most dumbfounding vocal effect I've ever heard without augmentation.
Tourniquet - It's like old Metallica, but... not.
Smalltown Poets - 100 Billion Watts was recommended to me by a friend, and it's quite an unique experience.
The Echoing Green - Hide gets a cite for not having gotten any less novel since I first heard it.
The Offspring - Dammit, I Changed Again, is another notable track on Conspiracy of One.

And finally, Mixmaster Mike's introduction for the Beastie Boys at the start of the Sydney 2000 concert and the rather heated rendition of Gratitude during said concert score points... just because.

Johnny Lurker
02-09-2001, 10:56 PM
Blindside - Only heard one song (As You Walk), but it's quite catchy.
Extol - Scandanavian Christian grindcore with tasteful use of strings. It doesn't get any better than this.
Eminem - His hate and whining gets tiring, but Stan's disturbing in a whole different way. Listen to it, ESPECIALLY if you don't like him.
Gonemad - Same deal as Blindside (the one song is Sorry...)
Linkin Park - They're a lot better than One Step Closer (the song and the music vid) would suggest.

Hmmm... nothing else comes to mind.

I know there are many varieties, but when songs are based around Christianity and it is rock then it is nominated as "Christian". When chores and things like that are used for singing about Christianity then it is called "Gospel".

P&W? Christian western/country music? No Gospel is like well gospel. youve never heard of it before? basically its big choir black church music. very moving. very spiritual. makes you want to get up and just move. you can "feel the spirit in the music" as they say. no its nothing like christian rock. most christian rock is mediocre wet noodle watered down rock without the good parts. unless you are talking something like Creed who are simply excellent.

What do you mean, "old but good?" That's like "big but large", as far as I'm concerned. :p

P.O.D. is really good rock. No profanity and no degration of women and sex.
DC Talk, Newsboys, Scott Kripaynne, Katinas and the classical stuff like Mozart and Beethoven.
Celtic music is my new craze. I love it.
But If I'm gonna dance it's gotta be S.K. or Katinas

Hey, Hebrew doesn't use the English alphabet, you can spell it however you want. :p As long as it sounds right, that is.

Yeah, Celtic music is nice, too. :)

"all rock" isn't Christian...:p

I don't like going to concerts. Too loud. BUt I like to "drown" myself in music while I'm at home. How wierd (weird) huh?

Have fun!

Gwai I think he meant all Christian rock he likes.
Maybe not but that was my impression

I like the Tolkien Ensemble...it's great to actually hear the songs in the books (many of which I've memorized)

I also like international music, especially Celtic.

I could have sworn there was already a thread like this over there. I'll find the like later when I feel like it.

Ah but anyway I'm a metalhead. I also like a lot of classic rock. My top 5 favorite bands are AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth, and Blind Guardian.

My musictaste depends so much on my taste. But Queen is the greatest band!:D I also like R.E.M., finnish band Don Huonot, Tracy Chapman, the film-music to LotR, Pearl Jam, U2 and many many more..

I love music!:D

Mostly I like metal. But I also like classical music, very few alternative rock bands, post rock and classic rock.

I like Rockabilly. It's fun, it's cool, and it can be played live. Rockabilly will never die. :)

I love Blind Guardian! They're so excellent. Other similar great metal bands include Thy Majestie and Sonata Arctica.

I also love Meatloaf and Metallica, and various other excellent bands.

Apart from metal, I enjoy ska, country, jazz, classical, punk, hard rock, and some hip hop and soft rock. I also like musicals such as "Hair".

For those who enjoy stuff like Blind Guardian I urge you to check out an Italian band called Elvenking. Their range of instruments and voices is amazing. And of course, they have a few songs about Middle Earth ;)

Wow. This is really old. And embarassing.

Just to set the record straight, I no longer like the bands I said I did back in '99. Times have changed, and my taste in music has vastly improved.

Ditto to what BoP said - the new choices are a definite improvement over korn any day :D

Strange how, as teenagers we listen to the hardest stuff we can lay our hands on (probably in a perverse attempt to peeve the parentals) yet, as we grow older and wiser our music taste seem to gravitate towards appreciating the songs our parents used to play all the time...........well, it's true for me anyway.

Anglorfin: Thanks for the tip about Elvenking, they're great! They remind me of the Brobdingnagian Bards, and of course, Blind Guardian.

Have you ever heard the Brobdingnagian Bards? <-- I just like typing that! :D They are a great duo though.
