What genre of music is your favorite?
I don't have one. I like all kinds.
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
About 15 or so, when I discovered the magic of The Beatles. Before that, not really. We didn't have a stereo or anything when I was growing up. We had a couple of radios but I never really got into listening to the radio. I still hate listening to the radio.... However, I went through an embarassing New Kids on the Block phase, as well as a solid gold hits 80s phase. :o When I started high school I started out liking mainstream stuff briefly, like the cranberries, and stuff. Ace to Base. Anyone remember them? :p It wasn't long after that that I saw the Beatles Anthology on tv, and was converted. Then I didn't listen to anything else until I was 17 or so, and I discovered Bob Dylan, and David Bowie.
How often do you attend a concert?
Not very often. I went to a Puccini opera recently....
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no)
Yes. I adore Beethoven.
Do you admire the Beatles?
Uh, see above. The Beatles are the Bees knees.
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
Quite often. I have a bit of everything on iTunes, and the BF is revisiting his classical music roots (he has a Bachelor of Music specialising in composition from the University of Auckland), so I never lack for anything to listen to. At the moment I'm going through a mozart/chopin phase.
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)
Yep. When I was 14 all I listened to was mainstream crap. And even then, I wasn't overly interested in music. I remember making fun of my friend for liking Michael Jackson and Guns 'n Roses, and another friend for liking Queen. I was a narrow-minded little bitch when I was young. A year later, I became one of the few Beatles fanatics in my school. In my year there was only one other, and we used to sing beatles songs in home-room when we were supposed to be reading. :D Still, the Beatles didn't immediately open the door to other stuff. It wasn't until I managed to convince myself that I liked Bob Dylan, that I really managed to 'grow' in terms of music tastes.
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
Bleh. If I want to listen to jazz, I'll frellin' listen to jazz. She's boring, and mainstream.
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop?
Rock. Pop. Depends on the mood.
Who is your favorite musician/band?
I don't know. I like too much stuff. And they're all good in their own little ways. Beatles, Led Zep, Mozart, Bob Dylan, The Who, David Bowie, Neal Young, Johnny Cash, Sinatra.... lots of stuff.
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
No way. Music is crap today.
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
I think they were more influenced by celtic mythology than Tolkienism.
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
I can sing really badly....

What genre of music is your favorite?
Rock/metal/goth
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
11-12
How often do you attend a concert?
When ever theres a decent band playing here - and if I can afford it (so not often at the minute) - never been to anything classical
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no)
Yes he was a great composer
Do you admire the Beatles?
Yes! I love the Beatles.
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
It depends what mood I'm in. I like some stuff, not all of it.
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)
Yes. Though not much. I was the one who got attacked in the courtyard at school, for telling Britney fans that she wasn't even pretty in her first video, and that I've heard better things come out of a dying cat. (Same for the 'boy bands')
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
Don't really like it. It's too laid back (and not in the good stoner music ways)
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop?
Do you really have to ask? Rock.
Who is your favorite musician/band?
I have so many - Led Zep, Hendrix, Metallica, SOAD, Nirvana, The Small Faces, The Animals, The Dammed, Meatloaf, QotSA, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Status Quo, Cake, The Rasmus, Manson, Motorhead, Queen, HIM..... just to name a few.:p
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
No. It's totally s*** now. Of course there are some exceptions.
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
I think they were influenced by alot of things.
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
Violin and piano, and I'm starting guitar soon.

[power] metal and rock.
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
14-15, actually...
How often do you attend a concert?
When a good band is around and I have the money (never, in other words).

Gotta get some credit for becoming so famous, but can't say I've heard much of him
Do you admire the Beatles?
Was my favorite band for at least six years! Still love 'em. :)
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
Very seldom, and when I do it's mostly in order to relax.
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)
Of course. I was pretty uninterested in music for a few years (excepting Beatles and the Stones), but then I found metal.
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
Only heard one or two songs by her, they were ok.
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop?
Rock!
Who is your favorite musician/band?
Blind Guardian, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers...
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
Depends. The 80's were nice. ;)
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
Yes. Whatever they say.
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
Nope.

What genre of music is your favorite?
I don't go by genres, music sounds good, or it doesn't!
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
I really started getting interested around 12 or 13, when I started buying 45's that excited me. Of course I would then play them to death and drive all my people crazy.
My parents NEVER listened to music, but my big brother was always trying to play his electric guitar with the Jimi Hendrix and Beatles songs of the day. I listened to my little transistor radio, under my pillow, to the WIFE Good Guys, to catch all the Beatles (and all the other good stuff of the 60's) songs, as soon as they came out. After the FM revolution...it was all about buying albums.
How often do you attend a concert?
I don't go to any now. Totally reached saturation point! I've been to far too many concerts to begin to even remember one fourth of them. :( (I'm sure it's well over the 1000 mark. I worked at a record store for years...which meant free tickets to everything... and I pretty much dated musicians exclusively till I married my (muscian  ) husband...it was ALL about music from 16 to 30! )
I would go to a local thing if an old friend (or my hubby) was doing something. I enjoy watching concerts on tv...in the comfort of my home.
We recently listened to the Grand Ole Opry over the internet....pumped through our big Advent speakers. That sounded GREAT! :D Marty Stuart's band was up, and you could even hear them plugging in the amps...superlative! (also the name of Marty's newest band! ;) )
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no)
yes, I guess!
I certainly don't disrespect him! But I know nothing much about classical (the slang term for classical was "Longhair" music, before the hippie generation came along! :D )
Do you admire the Beatles?
I adore the Beatles!
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
Only on the car radio, when my husband puts a classical station on in desperation, because he is totally stressed out and he claims the classical music soothes him. It usually puts the kids to sleep, so it works! ;)
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)
A little, I like mellower (more soothing ) stuff sometimes. I have the "smooth jazz" station programed as a favorite on my car now, something I would have never done before...but I am forced to seek solace from to much excitement/input also.
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
I'm afraid I'm not familiar with her.
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop?
I like good pop, and good rock...but I suppose I would favor good pop.
Who is your favorite musician/band?
I don't have a favorite. I insist on music with a good beat though, I love to dance...even if it's only in my mind now! ;)
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
Ha! Ha! I don't think so! :p I thought the 60's was the most exciting decade for music, but all times have their bright spots.
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
Farty noise......
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
I fiddle around on the piano.

What genre of music is your favorite?
I like traditional folk and modern rock and a couple of things in between.
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
I've always been interested in music of almost all kinds.
How often do you attend a concert?
Whenever possible (which is not very often).
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no)
Yes
Do you admire the Beatles?
Yes
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
Not as much as I used to. I like some of it (but not opera).
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)
I suppose so. I used to like pop when I was much younger.
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
I don't mind her, but she gets boring after a while. Jazzy "flavour" is the right word - not real jazz!
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop?
Rock
Who is your favorite musician/band?
Lots. Eliza Carthy, Kate Rusby, Idlewild and Muse are quite high up the list.
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
It was good in the 1870s :D I don't like music of the 1970s/80s/90s so I'll say maybe yes.
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
Don't have a clue :)
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
I play the piano.

What genre of music is your favorite?
Can't specify to a genre; I listen to a lot of different music.
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
I've always loved music. As a small child I listened to what my family listened to: Finnish music (dad), popular music (sister) and classic and folk (mum).
How often do you attend a concert?
Too seldom.:( I've totally been to about 5-10.
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no)
I cannot admire him, 'cause I've heard too little of his music.
Do you admire the Beatles?
No. I like them.
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
Not often. I do like it a lot:) don't ask why I listen to it so seldom..
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)
Changed in the way that it has evolved and my taste is now wider.
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
I like her music very much.
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop?
Rock
Who is your favorite musician/band?
Queen
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
No, I think everything in today's popular music is the same. Boring. But there is still a lot of good music today if one finds it.:)
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
No idea.
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
I've played the piano, but no more.:( I use my voice as an instrumen a lot (though it might not sound like a very well tuned instrument..:p )

My taste in music is very ecclectic. I have no real favorite. I enjoy music too much to compartmentalize my taste.
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
Music has always been a part of my life. When I was small, my Mom listened to the radio a lot during the early days of rock and roll, and she watched "American Bandstand" on TV. My Dad played a lot of bluegrass records and also Big Band stuff like Glenn Miller. Also, a lot of church music of the Bach/Handel variety.
How often do you attend a concert?
A couple times a year. There are community sponsored "Concerts by the Shore" that feature lots of different types of music during the summer. They're free. Bring a lawn chair and snacks, relax and enjoy a summer evening on Lake Ontario...
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no)
Yes.
Do you admire the Beatles?
Yes. My first celebrity crush was on Paul McCartney. I was in 6th grade...
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
I listen to the local Public Radio station quite a bit. I like classical music quite a lot, really. Baroque is cool, but I like it all. I just have to get used to some of the modern stuff.
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)
Yes. I appreciate jazz much more now than I used to. There is so much variety in it.
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
I like her. She's good!
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop?
Rock -- Classic Rock, anyway.
Who is your favorite musician/band?
I'm supposed to pick one???
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
The '70's. No contest.
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
I never got into Zep.
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
Please don't make me re-live the most unpleasant musical memories I have -- I took music lessons as a kid, and they were very traumatic!!!

What genre of music is your favorite?
i like all kinds of music: classical, classic hits, motown, blues, reggae, punk, metal, etc... but funky music with a good groove is near the top
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
since birth... my parents and my mother's siblings played us the beatles and all the other 60s groups from as early as i can remember... i remember figuring out how to get the white album to play on the record player when i was four :p
How often do you attend a concert?
through my high school years and my twenties, all the time (at least once a week if you include club shows)... now with the kids, once every month or two if i'm lucky :(
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no)
i admire him, but he is not one of my favorites... i prefer works that concentrate more on one or a few instruments than the symphonic form... like a chopin ballad or prelude over a mozart symphony... part of it may be because i'm a musician and symphonies tend to concentrate more on the piece than the performers... i like being able to distinguise the individual instruments
Do you admire the Beatles?
one of my many #1 favorites ;)
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
i go in phases... i tend to pull out three to four cds and listen to them for a while, then move onto something else for a bit... it might be the beatles, it might be public enemy or primus or bob marley, or it might be chopin... no real order to it... though i tend to listen to the heavier stuff when i'm working on my basement... it carries well over the power tools :p
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)
not really, mostly just grown... there are a few bands i listened to way back that got overplayed for me (U2, van halen, some of the 'classic hits' stuff), but even then... i just give them more time off
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
her stuff is much better than a lot of stuff you hear played way too much... that said, it doesn't excite me enough to actually buy it... i don't listen to truely 'mellow' music all that often, even by bands i like... i'm also not a huge jazz fan, though i like some of it... i prefer more straight or syncopated over the standard jazz shuffle
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop?
i like a good musician over a good song, which usually means rock... though you do get those occasions where pop musicians are both
Who is your favorite musician/band?
too many to choose... some i listen to a lot are james brown, beatles, hendrix, zepplin, bob marley, little feat, the meters, steely dan, king crimson, black flag, public enemy, red hot chili peppers, primus, chopin
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
each era had it's pluses and minuses... the 60s obviously had a lot of good stuff... the 70s had lots of easy listening junk, but also some good funk and soul music, not to mention reggae and punk at the end of it
the 80s are a bit tougher, but maybe because i was in high school then and just heard it too much... van halen and U2 were good bands, i just have a hard time listening to them anymore
the 90s grunge thing had a lot of good bands, soundgarden was one of my favorites, along with some pearl jam and some of the lesser-known bands... i enjoyed living colour too... and the rap scene has produced a lot of good musicians, though there is also a lot of trash to weed through
i enjoy some current stuff... but am a bit out of touch as far as names of songs and artists go
there's good music in every generation, you just have to search for it in some of them
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
directly in one that i can think of off the top of my head
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
bass guitar mainly, with the occasional acoustic guitar, harmonica and really bad percussion

What genre of music is your favorite?
I tend to gravitate towards rock of the "indie" variety, but generally I listen to whatever I like.
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
Always have been interested. I started listening to music of "my own" at about age 10 (Weird Al). My mom liked easy listening and classical--I preferred the Dvorak over the Dan Fogelburg.

so-so.

That's good though.
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)

What genre of music is your favorite?
Can't say I have a definitive favourite genre. I like a little bit of that, a little bit of this. As long as it's not too loud and too repetitive.

About 17-18, when I learned to tape my own tapes. :D
What type of music were you raised on?
Abba, Neil Diamond, Genesis, the Beattles, John Denver, ect....

Rarely. Whenever there's a I Muvrini-concert in the vicinity (which is hardly ever anymore because the b******s changed their yearly schedule) or the yearly visit to the Night of the Proms (which is rather unlike the British variant).

A little, I got to know a few new bands that I like now but didn't really like then en the other way around.

Possibly pop but it depends.
Who is your favorite musician/band?
Too many to choose! But I suppose Queen comes the closest.
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
Hm, neh. I like older song better than modern ones.
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
Dunno, can't remember any of their songs right now.
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
If you count the occasional pitiful attempt on a didgeridoo or a djembé, otherwise nope. I don't have any musical talent.

What genre of music is your favorite?
I don't think I have one definite favourite genre--I like lots of types of music, but I really enjoy "different" music, that doesn't really have a category, like groups like Dead Can Dance, Deep Forest, Enigma, etc.
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
I really started to be aware of and interested in music in my early teens--13 or 14 probably. I was raised on classical and Christian contemporary music.
How often do you attend a concert?
Rarely.
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no)
Yes.
Do you admire the Beatles?
No.
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
Quite often; yes, I like most of it.
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)
My tastes have definitely changed over the past 5 years (from age 13 to age 18): from pop to rock to hard metal to rock to classical to only Christian to very open as it is now (as I mentioned before)
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
I don't really care for Norah Jones--it is the "jazzy flavor" that is what I don't particularly like.
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop?
Rock.
Who is your favorite musician/band?
Tough question. I'll have to get back to you on that.
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
In terms of rock, I think yes, in terms of other music...I don't know.

Yes.
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
Yes: I play piano, I sing, and I used to play the french horn.
What genre of music is your favorite?
Rock
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
about 11-12, but I was raised on Hank Williams Jr and Led Zepplin

Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no)
yeah, but I like others better. he is okay.
Do you admire the Beatles?

Sometimes. i do enjoy it, but I didnt bring much to this place, so I havent really listened to it lately (I brought the 1812 overture, though!)
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)
not too much. They went backward from mainstreem stuff to classic rock, and now they are lodged in the 80's
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
dont even know who she is
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop?
well, rock, but not really anything new at all. except Tool. Tool forever

What genre of music is your favorite?
I like most genres, except for country.
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
I always remember listening to music. As a child my parents played a lot of traditional Ukrainian folk music, and my mother had a particular passion for gypsy music. We also listened to classical, opera, and what is now called "world music."
How often do you attend a concert?
I subscribe to a 5 concert series of new music at my local symphony. Beyond that, occasionally an opera, sometimes chamber music, and 3 or 4 experimental concerts a year.
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no)
yes
Do you admire the Beatles?
yes
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
4 or 5 times a week
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)
as a child and pre-teen my tastes were FAR more conservative... as a young adult I began to listen to experimental music and as I've grown older (I'm 41) I find that the music I enjoy most is that which challenges me.
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
as BoP said, boring and mainstream
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop?
rock
Who is your favorite musician/band?
too many to list... but a short one would have to include Lou Reed, early Talking Heads, Ornette Coleman, Bill Evans
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
I think there's always been good music around... you just need to seek it out
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
no idea... it's been decades since I've listened to them
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?

What genre of music is your favorite? both rock and classical
At what age did you start really getting interested in music? pre-teen years. I was really it it. What type of music were you raised on? I was raised by my dad on good rock (pink floyd, talking heads, etc. not to mention david bowie, especially "The Laughing Gnome"!) and my mom on stuff like The Cranberries and Joni Mitchell (sp.?)
How often do you attend a concert? I used to a few times in the summer, now not very often at all- maybe once or twice a year
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no) yes
Do you admire the Beatles? yes, but I don't like their music
How often do you listen to Classical Music? I go through phases, but probably at least once a week. do you like it? of course!
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years) Yeah. Lesse, 5 years ago...I was probably just starting to explore my own bands as opposed to just what I knew from my mom. I was pretty into Third Eye Blind, I think.
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music? I love jazz, and I admire NJ a little bit, but I can't really get into her music.
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop? rock, no contest
Who is your favorite musician/band? That one's really tough for me, especially it's hard to pick between classical musicians and rock bands.
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....) It's hard for me to say, since I was so young, but I think rock music isn't getting much better....
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs? of course.
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument? yes, piano. I really like piano. I also played clarinet for 5 years in band, but I didn't really like it that much. I can play some simple guitar tunes.

Maybe once every year, usually a youth festival like YC, but I attend an actual concert every 2 years or so.
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no)
Somewhat.
Do you admire the Beatles?
Not really.
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
Not that often, but sometimes on the radio. It's not my favourite, but I will be able to listen to it for a while.

Definetly, I used to be crazy over the lame pop groups when I was younger, but now i'v moved on.

I definetly do not like Norah Jones. Jazz is not my thing.

Hmmm....Probably either Queen or Piller or Aerosmith.

Not at all, the music now a days is not original and does not sound as good. Back int he 70's and 80's, musicians were different compared to each other and had their own unique style. They were good at what they did.
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?

What genre of music is your favorite?
I enjoy ALL genres except punk, rap, and pop-style country. I can't pick a favorite, but classic rock is up there, as is classic R&B, bluegrass, classic jazz, and classical. I really like traditional music from other countries, such as Ireland, China and India. I also like soundtracks to movies and musicals.
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
I have been listening to music since I was very little. My parents were big music fans, and I was raised listening to what is now "classic" rock (it was pop at the time: ah, for the days when rock was pop! :) ) and classical. I first started listening to my "own" music at around age 11. I was into The Beatles (my parents were/ are HUGE Beatles fans), also pop music of the time: Men at Work, Duran Duran, Adam Ant, etc.
How often do you attend a concert?
Never anymore, I'm too poor. :P I really wanted to see Todd Rundgren when he came to a local hall, but it was $30 a ticket, which I think is cheap by today's standards, but for me and my husband to go would be much too expensive for us. :( However, I used to go all the time as a teenager/ young adult (like twice a month). I think the last one I saw was my brother's band, Black Venus, at a local dive about a year ago.
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no) Yes!
Do you admire the Beatles? Yes!
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
Almost daily.

It has mainly expanded rather than changed. It has changed from 15 years ago: I was a metalhead in the 80s, but I listened to it so much that I got oversaturated, and I moved on to other things. But I still appreciate the music.
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
Never heard anything by her that I know of.
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop?
Rock, I suppose. It depends on the song.
Who is your favorite musician/band?
Right now I'm into Curtis Mayfield, Bessie Smith, Billy Preston, and whatever else strikes my fancy on any given day. :)
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
NO as far as what is being marketed, but I'm sure stuff is being produced out there that is great, it's just not accessable to the average consumer.
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
Of course, how could they not have been when they talk about Mordor and Gollum in Ramble On? :D
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
I play the recorder a little.

More polished but less inspired (in general). Too much imitation and not much innovation. That is a periodic condition though; most of the eighties music was not very inspired. Best periods of rock music: '67-'77 and '92-00.
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
yes
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
That's subjective.;) I have a piano and a guitar (and a harmonica) and once played the trombone.

I was around when Zep first hit it big and their records were often playing (loudly) in the background at parties and in the dorm, but at the time, I was going through my hippie girl/folkie phase (Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, PP&M, CSN&Y), that I didn't really pay much attention. But I certainly know who they are.
(Back then if I listened to rock it was CCR and Emerson, Lake and Palmer)

I can't believe I haven't done this mad cool survey yet!
What genre of music is your favorite?
If I had to pick one, I'd say Metal. I also love Punk, Rock, Ska, Classical, as well as some Blues, R 'n B, Alternative, Jazz, Hip Hop, Country, and Rap.
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
My parents listen to a lot of classical music, and took my brother and I to classical concerts when we were old enough to enjoy them.
I really started getting in to music when I was about 10 or 11, starting with New Kids on the Block, Vanilla Ice, and MC Hammer. I then added Alanis Morisette and No Doubt to my favourite bands. They are all still near and dear to my heart, even though I only occasionally listen to Alanis, and I'm not fond of No Doubt's new pop stuff. (They used to be Ska.)
I have been a great fan of Liona Boyd ever since I started playing classical guitar when I was about 12.
How often do you attend a concert?
Once ever 6 months, on average.
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no)
Yes. He was a very cool person, and a genius, and I love his music.
Do you admire the Beatles?
Yes, for the same reasons I admire Beethoven, except exchange "he" with "they".
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
I listen to it quite often, and I love classical music.
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)
Since I started taking an interest in music 10 years ago now, I have come to love Metal. I've also more recently been converted into a classical music lover, even though I don't possess the knowledge base that my dad (a classical music buff) or my brother (taking a music degree) do.
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
I've never listened to her, but I do like jazz.
Which do/would you like better, Rock or Pop?
Rock all the way baby.
Who is your favorite musician/band?
This is very difficult. I will say Liona Boyd for favourite musician, but I also really like Jimi Hendrix, John Williams (the classical guitarist), James Hetfield (Metallica lead singer) and Tarja Turunen (Nightwish lead singer).
Favourite band will be Metallica, for sentimental reasons (my first introduction to the wonders of metal) but I absolutely love Nightwish as well.
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
I don't think it's better, just different. If I was to judge the music scene solely by the most played/hyped, I'd say it was FAR better in the 70's and 80s, though those two decades are notably different. However, the schlock repeated ad nauseum on the radio doesn't really define the music of today, no matter what the major record companies and media promoters would have you believe.
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
IIRC, they actually said somewhere that Tolkien influenced the song "The Battle of Evermore" among others. "Misty Mountain Hop" is about hippies, though the title might mislead you.
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
I play classical guitar, and classical piano (even though I stink now). I used to take lessons in both, and I still try to practice guitar whenever I can, because I love it.
I can also sing passably though I have never taken lessons.

Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
My favorite style is barbershop. I can sing any of the four parts, though as I age I find the higher notes are harder to sing. When I sing karaoke I tend toward Elvis, Frankie, Cole Porter, that sort of thing.
I really started getting into at in church as a kid. I was a boy soprano. My parents met in the church choir and my Mom played organ, so we were all singers. I got drafted as a boy soprano in 2nd grade.
I give more concerts than I attend. I go to a few a year. I tend to spend such money on plays. Love Shakespeare!
Beethoven, yes.
Beatles, yes.
Classical, love it, big opera fan. I think I told the story about my entrance to opera fandom before, but I'll repeat it. I was new in my school, a transplanted 7th grader, and I was thin and poor so I wore hand-me-downs that didn't fit, which made me a target. So I used to stay inside the school during recess. That's when I heard the singing. It was coming from a classroom. The teacher would listen to opera during recess. It was beautiful It expresssed my loneliness and alienation. I got closer. Over the week I went from hiding in the bathroom to sitting in the stairwell outside that classroom. Sudddenly I was jolted from my reveries by the teacher. He asked me why I wasn't outside playing. I blurted out that I didn't want to go outside, I wanted to listen to the music. So he let me into that classroom (it was eighth grade, I felt so mature!) and showed me how to read a libretto. Then he tols me when Milton Cross was going to do the Texaco Opera thing from the Met that weekend. Next thing you know, my Mom and I were listening to operas every saturday together. The first album I bought was Toscanini's La Boheme. The second was a three record set of arias and songs performed by Franco Corelli. You can still find the arias in a collection called Heroes, but it's not the complete set that I had back then. moving on...
My musical taste changed a fair amount over the years. In my late teens I was a jazz snob (i.e. I refused to isten to anything but jazz.) Then in my twenties I did the same thing with classical. But I finally mellowed out and I try to treat each piece of art on its own terms. For instance I never used to like Frank Sinatra, but now I listen to him sometimes and will cover him at karaoke too.
Norah is OK. She sings Hoagy so she can't be all bad. :)
Of the two, I lean Rock-ish. Especially progressive stuff that takes some musicianship to play.
Favorites, hmmm... I wept when George Harrison died. I was very upset when John Lennon was shot. But it may have been the message of Love, y'know, that I wept for. I have all of Pink Floyd, most of Jethro Tull, but if I were to weigh the percentages on my iPod, right now there's more Verdi than anything else.
My opinion about music now versus then? No, it's pretty much the same. Compared to the nineteenth century, I'd say it's not better.
Led Zep, I dunno. Gollum stole his girlfriend, I guess, but I think that was a schoolmate that was called Gollum or something. Except something about Misty N Mountain, right? I really don't know. Not my cuppa. :)
I play guitar, bass, ukulele, a little sitar, a little keyboards, and sing, so I use my 24-track recorder for vanity reasons.

What genre of music is your favorite?
I listen to just about everything. My favorite would have to be classic rock though.
At what age did you start really getting interested in music?/What type of music were you raised on?
I've always had an interest in music but didn't realy get interested untill I was about 12 and heard Led Zepplin for the first time.
How often do you attend a concert?
I use to go a lot but haven't been to one in about 2 yrs now. I really need to try and see one this summer. Any suggestions?
Do you admire Beethoven? (yes or no)
Sure do. He played the piano like Jordan played basketball. Huh?
Do you admire the Beatles?
I admire what they did for music but I'm not a big fan.
How often do you listen to Classical Music? do you like it?
Hardly ever, it's okay.
Has your music tastes changed over the last five/ten years? (or any number of years)
I go through phases. One month I will listen to a lot of hip-hop the next will be country, and then next might be heavy metal. Just depends on the mood I guess.
What do you think of Norah Jones? do you like the jazzy flavor of her music?
I like Norah Jones. She's got a good sound and her voice is soothing.

Rock, hands down.

It's a toss up between The Doors and Led Zepp.
In your opinion, is music better now than it was back in the 70's 80's 90's? (I'm probably talking about rock here....)
Absolutely not.
Do you think that Led Zeppelin was influenced by Tolkien for some of their songs?
Lets see. Plant named his dog Strider, he makes LotR references in many songs, I'm going to say yes.
Do you play an instrument?/which instrument?
I played the trombone in the grade school band. Does that count?
