What, in you chaps' opinion, is the best book?

Just a though... Mine is PoA.

If I think, I might know why.

I prefer Goblet of Fire, partly because I have sentimental attachment to it from having read it the first time on a very lonely night when it kept me company.

My fave is also PoA. That's because my two fave characters, Sirius and Remus, are in it. It would be OotP, but Sirius dies. Grrrrr!!

i'd have to prisoner of azkaban. in my opinion, PoA is really central to the development of the rest. ok, so you could argue that volemort's return in GoF is the real climax of the series (or argue some other moment, but that's the one that jumps out at me), but you have the whole set up for it in PoA, not to mention the introduction of two big characters - remus and sirius - and i think because voldemort isn't so directly involved to the plot of PoA, it makes it kind of more interesting... plus all the little twists just make it great! :D

PoA - it's where the series really grows up.

I really liked PoA, mostly because of Sirius and Remus but also because Harry finally got somthing like a family.

I really did like OOTP.

POA always gets my vote though. OOTP Siruis dies and it'll be a while before I read that book and not cry. Sounds sappy but...

EDIT: I wouldn't say it grows up there. The first three books are really fluffy if you ask me. IF you mean plot yes I suppose you'd have a point but I'm talking readable. Like the vocabulary stuff like that. Readable it grows up in GOF.

I mean in terms of subject matter, really. In PoA the plot is about adults' relationships with each other and Harry coming to understand other people's problems a bit more. In terms of vocabulary and style I don't think the series has ever grown up.

The Prisoner of Azkaban is my favourite aswell. I love the character of Sirius (I was VERY mad and upset when J.K killed him off!) and I'd have to agree, Lupin is also ver cool.

OOTP would have to come close though. It's more mature than the others. But killing off Sirius was a bad choice (I know, I know, I'm still bitter:rolleyes: ).

Welcome to the moot Sono, hope you have fun here.:)

I really like PoA too. I think it's because the 1st 2 are a bit short and have simple plots, but PoA is starting to get quite complex, whereas OotP and GoF are a bit longwinded…having said that, GoF was really good. I thought a lot of OotP was just padding and she could have cut a lot of it out

By far, I think Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the best because it has more action with the Triwizard Cup and the Quiddich World Cup. It has the most thrilling encounter with Lord Voldemort.
